PNG National Premier League kicks off as Lae City FC returns to schedule with eleventh hour change

The Papua New Guinea National Premier League kicked off this weekend with much anticipation and excitement in the cities of Port Moresby and Lae. However, the lead-up to the start of the league was not without its share of drama and last-minute changes.

Lae City FC, a prominent club in the country, was faced with a major setback as their long-term sponsor, Lae Biscuit, decided to withdraw their support. This move was in protest against the management of the sport by the PNG Football Association. The sudden loss of sponsorship left Lae City FC in a precarious position, jeopardizing their participation in the national league.

Fortunately, just in time, Lae City FC managed to secure a new sponsorship deal that allowed them to return to the national league. The news came as a relief to the team and their supporters, as they eagerly prepared for their upcoming matches.

Initially, the league was supposed to consist of only five teams, but due to the late developments, the eleventh hour saw the addition of three more teams, bringing the total to eight. The participating teams in the PNG National Premier League now include Hekari United, Gulf Komara, Port Moresby Strikers, Lae City FC, Lae City Dwellers, FC Morobe Wawens, United Highlands FC, and Madang FC.

As the first matchweek got underway, three matches were already played, showcasing some thrilling football action. At the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby, Hekari United, one of the league’s top contenders, faced an unexpected defeat against Port Moresby Strikers, with the latter securing a 2-1 victory.

Meanwhile, in Lae, at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium, Lae City Dwellers emerged victorious in their match against Madang FC, winning by a comfortable margin of 3-1. The fans were elated as their team showcased their skills and claimed an important early victory.

In another closely contested match, FC Morobe Wawens managed to secure a narrow 3-2 win over United Highlands FC, demonstrating the fierce competition and the determination of all the participating teams.

However, the much-anticipated match between the defending champions, Lae City FC, and Gulf Komara is yet to take place. Football enthusiasts and supporters eagerly await the debut of the national champions, hoping for an exciting clash between the two teams.

The kick off of the PNG National Premier League marked the beginning of a new season filled with promise, challenges, and the thrill of competitive football. With the current dark situation on PNG Football Association, the return to show some improvement must be in a better organised national league. The future will say the outcome of the current season will be favourable for the development of the sport in the country.
