No room for surprises: New Zealand puts seven past Fiji to win OFC U-19 Women’s Championship

New Zealand’s U-19 women’s team has secured a coveted spot in the upcoming U-20 Women’s World Cup, set to take place in Colombia next year. The team, affectionately known as the Ferns, displayed their dominance in the grand final of the OFC U-19 Championship by defeating the host nation, Fiji, with an impressive scoreline of seven goals to nil.

The match showcased the exceptional talent of the New Zealand players, as they effortlessly outplayed their opponents. The Ferns wasted no time in asserting their authority, with Manaia Elliott opening the scoring in the 13th minute. Elliott’s goal was swiftly followed by another in the 30th minute, displaying her prowess in front of the net. As the first half drew to a close, Ella McCann further extended New Zealand’s lead with a goal in the 40th minute.

The second half continued in a similar fashion, with Ruby Nathan finding the back of the net twice, in the 52nd and 66th minutes, respectively. Charlotte Mortlock added to the scoreline in the 75th minute, while Emma Pijnenburg confidently converted a penalty kick in the 78th minute to cap off an outstanding performance.

The victory marked New Zealand’s eighth consecutive title in the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship, solidifying their reputation as the dominant force in Oceania. The team’s remarkable achievement not only secured them another trophy but also guaranteed their participation in the highly anticipated FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia in 2024.
