The sun was beginning to set over the picturesque city of Mostar as FK Velež prepared to take on GOŠK Gabela in the second game of the 2023/24 season in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s top-tier league. After an impressive 5-0 victory in their opening match, the Velež faithful were eager to see their team continue their winning streak. The buzz in the stadium was palpable as the players took their positions on the field.
As the clock ticked towards the 79th minute, the game remained deadlocked in a tense stalemate. Both teams were giving their all, but neither could find a breakthrough. Sensing the need for fresh attacking impetus, the Velež coach made a bold decision, calling upon Solomon Islands’ Lea’i to enter the fray and make an impact.
Lea’i’s presence injected a new sense of urgency into Velež’s attacking play. His quick combinations with the midfielders and wingers created dangerous opportunities in front of the GOŠK Gabela goal. However, the visiting defense was resolute, and their goalkeeper made some stunning saves to deny Velež from finding the back of the net.
In the dying seconds of injury time, a dramatic twist unfolded. Velež was awarded a penalty kick after a foul inside the box. The entire stadium held its breath as Nermin Haskić, one of the team’s most experienced players, stepped up to take the spot-kick. The weight of the entire game rested on his shoulders.
With a sense of anticipation and hope, Haskić struck the ball with power and precision. But to the collective anguish of the Velež faithful, the ball was defended by the goalkeeper and went out of play. The referee blew the final whistle shortly after, and the match ended in a frustrating 0-0 draw.

Despite the disappointment of not securing another victory, there was a sense of optimism among the fans. The emergence of Raphael Lea’i as a bright young talent provided hope for the future. His performances in the first two games showcased his potential to become a vital asset for Velež Mostar throughout the season.
As the team headed back to the dressing room, the focus shifted to the next challenges that lay ahead. This was only the second match of the season, and there were plenty of opportunities to make their mark in the league.
