Thomas Dunn, a 21-year-old talent from Fiji, is currently on trial with A-League side Sydney FC, marking a significant step in his burgeoning football career. The Navua player, regarded as one of the biggest prospects in Fijian football, embarked on a two-week trial following the OFC Nations Cup, where he contributed to Fiji’s fourth-place finish.
According to Fiji national team staff member Kartik Reddy, Dunn’s performance during the trial has been notable. “This Friday is his last day. He has been doing well so far but depends on the club. A-League visa player rules are tough but hopefully he makes good progress,” Reddy shared with Oceania Football Center.
Additionally, Reddy revealed that Sydney FC’s coach, Ufuk Talay, reached out directly to Fiji’s head coach, Rob Sherman, to facilitate Dunn’s trial. “Sydney FC’s coach Ufuk Talay had directly contacted Rob Sherman, Fiji national team coach, in order to bring Dunn for further evaluations in the current trial,” Reddy added.
The highlight of Dunn’s trial came on Thursday during a friendly match against Newcastle Jets. Sydney FC emerged victorious with a 4-0 scoreline, and Dunn made a significant impact despite playing only the final 30 minutes. “Jets’ pressure didn’t last long though and it would soon be a fourth when trialist Thomas Dunn whipped in a low cross into the box with the ball striking the arm of a Jets defender and the match official once again pointing to the spot,” noted the Sydney FC game report.

As Dunn’s trial period comes to an end, the outcome remains to be seen. However, the opportunity to be in a professional football environment is already a considerable achievement. While visa regulations pose challenges for South Pacific players moving directly to the A-League, Dunn’s journey is a remarkable step forward. His potential success with Sydney FC would mark a significant milestone in his football career, reflecting both his talent and the growing recognition of Fijian football prospects on the international stage.
