The new expansion club set to compete in the A-League, Auckland FC of New Zealand, has announced a significant addition to their roster: Hiroki Sakai. The 34-year-old Japanese right-back becomes the club’s first international signing, adding a touch of international experience to the squad.
Sakai, whose last club was Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan’s J1 League, has had an impressive career in various leagues. His notable stints include playing for Marseille in Ligue 1 and Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga. Sakai’s extensive experience, including his participation in the FIFA World Cup and AFC Asian Cup with the Japan national team, is expected to bring valuable leadership and stability to Auckland FC.

Auckland FC has predominantly focused on New Zealand talent, with recent signings including Cameron Howieson, Michael Woud, and Max Mata. The club’s signing policy allows for international players, but with limited slots, Sakai’s addition marks a significant step in enhancing the team’s competitive edge. Apart of New Zealand players and Sakai, Auckland had signed Scott Galloway, Australian and former Wellington Phoenix player, Australian/Fijian and current A-League champion Dan Hall and former Melbourne Victory midfielder Jake Brimmer.
Sakai’s arrival is seen as a strategic move to bolster Auckland FC’s squad as they prepare for their debut season in the A-League. The club’s management is optimistic about the impact Sakai will make, both on and off the pitch, as they aim to establish themselves in the league.
