New Zealand’s OlyWhites exits Paris Olympics with 3-0 defeat to France

New Zealand’s campaign at the Paris Olympics came to a close with a 3-0 defeat to the hosts, France, in Marseille. The OlyWhites needed a win to secure a spot in the quarter-finals but were ultimately outclassed by a formidable French side.

Despite the tough result, Darren Bazeley’s team put in a valiant effort against the tournament favorites. Although New Zealand failed to register a shot on target, they managed to create several half-chances, including a notable opportunity when defender Michael Boxall headed a ball just over the crossbar.

New Zealand’s brightest moments came courtesy of Sarpreet Singh, who orchestrated a few dangerous plays. However, the match took a turn in the 19th minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace capitalized on a fortunate rebound off the New Zealand defense, slotting the ball past Alex Paulsen to give France the lead.

The OlyWhites started the second half with renewed energy, enjoying more possession and pressing forward. Nonetheless, France secured their dominance with a goal from Desire Doue in the 71st minute, who had been a constant threat throughout the match. Just three minutes later, Arnaud Kalimuendo added a third goal, sealing New Zealand’s fate.

New Zealand concludes their Olympic journey finishing third in their group, behind France and the USA, but ahead of Guinea, whom they defeated in their opening match. Despite the disappointment of their exit, the team showed resilience and promise for the future.
