Valiant Hekari eliminated despite impressive win over Galaxy

Hekari United of Papua New Guinea secured their first win of the competition earlier today, defeating the thus far impressive Galaxy FC 2-1. However, due to Eastern Suburbs victory against reigning champions Hienghène Sport in the early kick-off, this was not enough to see them progress to the knockout stages.

Hekari will see their failure to defeat Hienghène Sport as the key moment in their campaign, with Galaxy and Eastern Suburbs both able to put four goals past the reigning champions, while Hekari could only manage a 2-2 draw.

Both sides knew going into the game that only a three-goal (or more) victory for Hekari would see the two sides switch places in the group standings, so while Hekari pressed from the first moment to get the goals they required, Galaxy began the game calmly and patiently in possession, frustrating the Hekari attack with some solid defensive work and some nice touches in the midfield.

Eager to score the first goal, Hekari began the game with a few pot-shots from outside the box, with Michael Foster getting a few of them close to the goal. However, this tactic was quickly abandoned as ineffective, and instead, the Reds tried their usual method of utilising the pace of the Kepo brothers, while the incoming Vito Laloata, who replaced the injured Patrick Aisa, worked as the target man, bringing the ball down and holding up play for other around him. This was, theoretically, a sound tactic, but Laloata’s first touch is not quite at the standard required to play that sort of role effectively.

In the 13th minute, Hekari lost talismanic playmaker David Muta to injury, casting doubt on the side’s ability to pull off the result they needed. He was replaced by Willie Gia.

The first half, while pulsating, didn’t provide any goals, so the two sides went into the half-time break goalless. However, Hekari once again came onto the attack in the second half, and following a poor goal kick from Seiloni Iaruel in the 53rd minute, Vito Laloata’s headed through-ball found Ati Kepo, who squeezed past two Galaxy defenders and rifled the ball past the goalkeeper for Hekari’s first, sending the home crowd into raptures.

Hekari were emboldened, and saw their chance. Ten minutes later, excellent work from Michael Foster and Kolu Kepo on the left wing saw the older brother find his younger brother rushing towards the penalty box. Ati Kepo controlled the lofted pass with finesse, before burying the ball past Iaruel and sprinting over to the home fans with delight. Hekari found themselves just one goal away from an unlikely qualification.

Slowly but surely, however, Hekari’s failure to pick up a third goal saw the tide of play turn slightly. Galaxy had looked dangerous going forward, but were often caught offside by Hekari’s high defensive line. The ball actually ended up in the back of the net on one occasion, before being ruled out for offside, but the warning signs were there.

Then, with time running out on Hekari’s quest to find their decisive third goal, Hekari’s inability to win the second ball led to substitute Kensi Tangis being released on the right wing. He drilled a cross into the box for unmarked Bong Kalo to slot past Ishmael Pole in the Hekari goal. Kalo, himself returning from a suspension which saw him ruled out of the opening two matches, will be delighted to have finally got his OFC campaign underway.

Kalo’s goal took the sting out of the game. Hekari, now in need of another two goals to qualify, pushed hard, but as time ticked away, the game fizzled out, and while the match was settled in Hekari’s favour, qualification went the way of Galaxy. Galaxy’s second-place finish means their quarter-final will be away from home against one of the group winners, while Hekari will shift their focus to their domestic National Soccer League campaign, which continues next weekend.

The champions are knocked-out: Hienghène is smashed by Eastern Suburbs

The ‘Group of Death’ was really tough; it can be proven when we realize the current OFC Champions League winners Hienghène Sport suffered 10 goals in three matches and is already knocked-out of the tournament still in the group stage. Eastern Suburbs was too strong for a very different Hienghène Sport.

The team of Felix Tagawa did not feature the experienced players Roy Kayara and Bertrand Kaï – something not expected for the clash against the New Zealand champions, but that shows the situation is not good for the New Caledonians. If you check the line-up of the only match Hienghène Sport played in the last FIFA Clubs World Cup against Al-Sadd, you will see a number of differences: no Bertrand Kaï, no Georges Bearuné, no Brice Dahité, no Cédric Sansot – just to name a few. The young Nelson Kaï, Georges Wakanumuné and Rayan Oue were introduced in the team, but Eastern Suburbs were too strong for them.

Just at the 3rd minute of the game, the striker Jake Mechell had a clear chance that went wide, but at the 11th minute of play the prolific goalscorer Martin Bueno found the nets again with a fantastic header after a well-taken corner to open the scoreline. Six minutes later, the same Bueno flicked the ball to Reid Drake, the midfielder was in an one-on-one situation with the opposition goalkeeper and lobbed perfectly Rocky Nyikeine to double the lead of the New Zealand side.

One more to the account of Martin Bueno – OFC Media

Hienghène Sport thrown themselves upfront, but could not really create any trouble for the strong defensive system made by the coach Tony Readings. It was Martin Bueno that hit the woodwork with a fantastic free-kick still in the first half.

The story of the game did not change after the break: Eastern Suburbs managed their lead without many efforts, while Hienghène had no creativity in attack despite having good spells of possession with the ball upfront.

Another defensive mistake – one of the various of the match committed by Hienghène – was capitalized by Eastern Suburbs: Martin Bueno received upfront and scored the third for his team in the process, the sixth of the Uruguyan in the OFC Champions League – the top goalscorer so far.

The acccount was finished at injury time, when the substitute Matthew Palmer made a very good run in the flank to set up Jake Mechell in the box, he rolled the ball for the Englishman Adam Thurston to find the top left-corner of Rocky Nyikeine to score the fourth of the Lilywhites and seal his side spot in the knock-out stage of the OFC Champions League.

The disappointment of Hienghène’s players

Eastern Suburbs is virtually the winner of the group A – Galaxy FC will need to beat Hekari United by 3-0 to surpass the goal difference of the Lilywhites to top the group, if it does not happen, the New Zealand side will host one of the quarterfinals of the current edition of the OFC Champions League.

Hienghène will need to regroup and now focus in the Mobil Super Ligue – the top-tier of football in New Caledonia – and learn from the several mistakes committed in the three matches in Papua New Guinean soil. A very different team than the one were used to, very different from the champions of 2019.

You can watch the goals from Hienghène Sport 0-4 Eastern Suburbs in the video below:

Hopes alive for Hekari as they face Galaxy for a spot in OFC Champions League knock-out stage

Hekari United will play for their life in the OFC Champions League 2020 against the Ni-Vanuatu powerhouse Galaxy FC. The Papua New Guinean side will need to beat their opponent by a 3-goal advantage result if they want to proceed to the knock-out stage of the regional competition. If Hekari can complete this very hard duty, they will qualify and the Ni-Vanuatu will be knocked-out in the group stage.

Galaxy knows how hard it will be for their opponenets to proceed, but they also have something to fight for this match: a win can make the team coached by Batram Suri to top the group, what means they will host the quarterfinal game in Port Vila – having the so important home crowd advatange.

Galaxy is the surprise of the Group A so far – OFC Media

Hekari will need to take care of the strong offensive trio of Galaxy FC, composed by the Brazilian attacking midfielder Roberson, the English striker Terence Carter and Solomon Islands international Gagame Feni. Galaxy proved their worth when beating the current title holders of the tournament Hienghène Sport by 4-1 and in a 2-2 draw against the New Zealand champions Eastern Suburbs – suffering a equalizer at injury time.

Hekari will expect the Brazilian midfielder Vinicius Reis can use his creativity to guide his side in the middle of the park alongside the experienced David Muta that comes for the match after seeing a red card in the opener against Eastern Suburbs. The main issue for Hekari in their first two matches were the poor finishing: the strikers Ati Kepo, Kolu Kepo and Patrick Aisa could not provide good finishing, wasting many goalscoring opportunities created by the talented midfielders of the Papua New Guinean team.

Hekari will certainly have a hard challenge against Galaxy FC, but the Ni-Vanuatu side also can expect a hungry local side hoping to give some joy to their home fans.

Slim chances to qualify for Hienghène as they face strong Eastern Suburbs

The current champions of the OFC Champions League are close to a big disappointment: they will need to win Eastern Suburbs for at least a 4-goal margin if they want to depend only on their efforts to proceed to the next stage of the current edition of the regional tournament. If they win by a lower goal margin, they will depend on what happens in the second game of the day between Galaxy FC and Hekari United.

In the other hand, the situation of the newcomers from New Zealand in the tournament is very different: even a defeat can still put them in the knock-out stage, but to not depend in results from other matches the New Zealanders will only need a draw to seal their spot in the decisive phase in their first ever apperance in the OFC Champions League.

Eastern Suburbs had to fight to draw against Galaxy FC – OFC Media

Eastern Suburbs won their first group match against Hekari United by 2-1 with a brace of the striker Martin Bueno; another brace from the Uruguyan helped his side to grab one point against Galaxy FC after a late goal to seal a 2-2 draw.

The Lilywhites are definitively not impressing in the group stage, but their experience and to count on a player of the quality of Martin Bueno are meaning much for their aspirations in the regional tournament. This makes the team of Tony Readings to be in a very comfortable situation to proceed to the knock-out stage in the final matchday of group A.

After suffering a shocking defeat against Galaxy FC from Vanuatu by 4-1, Hienghène played a better football against Hekari United. Although their better game, they just could keep slim chances to proceed as they only draw against the hosts at late stages of the match thanks to a penalty converted by Joseph Athalé.

The current champions are not seeming the same from the last season, but they still have a shot against the strong side of Eastern Suburbs and Hienghène already proved they are able to make fantastic comebacks. We can expect a very lively game – and if Hienghène wants to qualify, they will need to attack the well organized defense of Eastern Suburbs.

Three matches in the weekend of football in ISPS Handa Premiership

The New Zealand top-tier football continues to have less matches than usual in the matchweek due the OFC Champions League start. One match of the this weekened in rescheduled: the Hamilton Wanderers vs Waitakere United that was interrupted due bad weather will be replayed at Porrit Stadium. In the other two matches of the weekend, Tasman United will receive Auckland City at Trafalgar Park, while Canterbury United will have a hard duty against Team Wellington playing in Christchurch.

The rescheduled match between Hamilton Wanderers and Waitakere United will take place on Porrit Stadium, Hamilton and both sides will hope to recover from their defeats in the previous weekend of football in ISPS Handa Premiership.

Waitakere suffered a 2-1 defeat away from home against Southern in Dunedin and will hope that the duo Sam Burfoot and Dane Schnell can be back to the scoresheet to help them to collect very important three points in the process – to keep pursuing in the top tabled Team Wellington and Auckland City.

Hamilton also suffered a very surprising defeat at Eden Park against Phoenix Reserves; the team coached by Kale Herbert also have a very important attacking duo – Tommy Semmy and Derek Tieku – that do not find the nets for a reasonable time. The home crowd will certainly expect a better performance from Wanderers in order to get closer to the top-four tabled sides in the league so far.

Emiliano Tade is back in style for Auckland City – NZF Media

Combining the previous and the current regular seasons of ISPS Handa Premiership, Auckland City is still to know what a defeat is. The Navy Blues continue their unbeaten run and will expect the club legend Emiliano Tade can continue his great form since rejoining the team when they take on Tasman United in Nelson. Another key figures for Auckland in this match can be certainly the All-Whites Logan Rogerson, Myer Bevan and Clayton Lewis.

Tasman will hope to keep close the top four teams in the table and for this the team will need to grab points againt the current premiers. The likes of Jesse Randall and Jean-Philippe Saïko can be very important for the team coached by Jess Ibrom to get an upset against Auckland City at Trafalgar Park.

https://oceaniafootballcenter.home.blog/2019-20-isps-handa-premiership/The current situation in the table for the Dragons is not really what the coach Lee Padmore expected at the starting of the season in this point of the league. Canterbury is the last-placed side with just nine points in the process and they will have another big challenge ahead: they will take on the 2nd placed Team Wellington on Sunday at English Park, Christchurch.

The team commanded by the experienced midfielder Aaron Clapham is still to find their best form in the league; they already suffered big defeats in the process and they are still to draw or win a match in 2020 – being their last win in the league in 20th December, 2019 against Tasman United.

Team Wellington will expect to take advantage on the bad situation Canterbury United is and collect all points from this away match. The likes of Jack Henry-Sinclair, Nathi Hailemarian and Sam Mason-Smith can be crucial for a good performance for the team coached by Scott Hales.

Kennedy Watemae: we played hard until the final whistle blow

Henderson Eels made a historical comeback in their 3-2 win over Lautoka in Soccer City Stadium in Luganville, Vanuatu and a 22-year-old forward was very important for this achievement: Kennedy Watemae. The young player is at his first OFC Champions League appearence and scored the first goal after coming from the bench for his side – later on Raphael Lea’i and Joses Nawo added the another two to complete the comeback and send Eels for the second time in a row to the knock-out stage of the OFC Champions League.

I’m trying my best for to score goals, I hate to lose and also I trust my teammates that together we can make it“, said the strong forward. Watemae started the previous matches of Henderson Eels, but this time he was used coming from the bench in place of Hudson Felani – and he had a quick impact: “The coach told me to stay high ann put more effort; this helped our team in the comeback”, stated Watemae.

Watamae knows his goals was instrumental for the comeback and the qualification of Henderson Eels to the quarterfinals: “The first goal made our boys to come stronger, made their mind strong to put more effort on the field, so we played very hard until the final whistle blow off“, says the forward. “I was so happy when Joses Nawo scored the 3rd goal to make it a win. I was very happy because I know we were going to win the when I see Joses to put the ball in the nets“, added Watemae.

The competition continues for the Solomon Islanders after this fantastic win over the Fijian side of Lautoka and Watemae expects his first appearece at OFC Champions League keeps being historical: “It will be tough [the knock-out stage] and the coach will tell us which was our failures and we will work on. It will not be easy but we will fight for it“, explains the attacker.

In 2019 edition of the tournament, Henderson Eels was knocked-out at the quarterfinal stage after suffering a harsh defeat against the New Zealand powerhouse Team Wellington. Watamae and his teammates will hope the story will be different in 2020 OFC Champions League – keeping the dream alive.

Tommy Smith is back to English football

The fourth matchweek of 2020 Vodafone Premier League is set to begin. There will be only two matches this weekend once Lautoka recently played the OFC Champions League and Ba is getting ready for their international challenge in the same competition.

After winning two matches in a row, Rewa has the chance to take the lead if they do not lose to Labasa at Subrail Park. On the other hand, Labasa needs to win again to climb some positions in the ladder. Young and talented Patrick Joseph is ready to show his talent alongside with many other good players from Rewa while Labasa will count on Siotame Kubu – that scored a brace last weekend – and his teammates.

Nadi will face Nasinu on Sunday at Prince Charles Park. After two losses, The Jetsetters need to recover against Nasinu that won in the 2020 Vodafone Premier League for the first time in the last weekend’s match against Labasa.

Saula Waqa is back to Ba

The Fiji international top-marksman Saula Waqa is back to Ba to play the ucopming OFC Champions League, that will kick-off for the Fijian powerhose coached by Ricki Herbert in March. The powerful striker is fully recovered from a serious injury that put him in the sidelines for more than six months.

The player is a very important to a team that already have the likes of Samuela Drudru, Micah Tommy, Benjamin Totori and Darold Kakasi upfront. The striker already represented Ba in the OFC Champions League and was the top goalscorer of 2017 Vodafone Premier League playing for the Men in Black.

The 197cm tall striker had interest from another Fijian clubs during the transfer window – according to reliable sources – but was retained by Ba, the same team he plays since youth age groups. The 24-year-old player already scored 8 times in 10 matches for Fiji national team; he was also part of the Fiji U20 side that qualified for the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup, where he played and scored in the historical 3-0 win over Honduras in the group stage.

Solid Wellington Phoenix beats Western United to climb spots in the table

The New-Zealand side Wellington Phoenix got their second win in a row in the Australian top-tier Hyundai A-League after beating at Sky Stadium Western United by 2-0. The victory was very importanto for the team coached by Ufuk Talay as they climbed two spots in the ladder to be ranked 3rd at the moment – Perth Glory is still to play in the round and can take the 5th place of Phoenix.

Phoenix used very different colours than the usual yellow, black and white: the team weared blue and green in support for the Mental Health Foundation from New Zealand – and their new outifits seemed to bring luck to the captained by Steven Taylor.

The first half was completely dominated by the home side; the former Wellington Phoenix players were booed all over the park when touching the ball, but the fans will have to assume the goalkeeper Filip Kurto made a fantastic game – being the responsible for avoiding a harsh defeat for his new side Western United. Ulises Dávila, Gary Hooper, David Ball and Reno Piscopo shots were denied by the Polish custodian, Phoenix were reaching Western United area very easily and it would be a pity for Ufuk Talay side to not score in their pressure. But their efforts paid off when Ulises Dávila found the wonderkid Liberato Cacace inside the box, with a classy finish the left-back put the ball in the back of the next of Kurto.

The New Zealand club continued to pursue their second goal while Western United could not create trouble for the defensive system led by Steven Taylor. The result at the break was a comfortable 1-0 lead for the hom side, but the story of the game would chance in the second half. The visitors put the ball forward looking for a equalizer and the likes of Connor Pain and Besart Berisha created some trouble for the Nix defense, forcing the New Zealand international goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic to make some decent stops.

The introduction of Callum McCowatt and Alex Rufer in place of Reno Piscopo and Cameron Devlin respectively put two more New Zealanders into action – the final sub of Ufuk Talay was in the final minutes of game, adding more speed to the team introducing Jaushua Sotirio in place of the Englishman Ufuk Talay.

Despite all efforts of Western United, Phoenix found the nets once again in the late stages of the match: a defensive mistake allowed the long ball of Stefan Marinovic to reach David Ball that made no mistake in an one-on-one situation with the opposition goalkeeper to give the final numbers to the match.

Phoenix continued their good form with an impressive performance, especially in defense having their fourth clean sheet in the season and the second in a row. Phoenix will be back to the pitch on Sunday when they play away from home the Central Coast Mariners at 6PM NZT.
