Siotame Kubu: a hero’s tale

Siotame Kubu had an amazing year in Fijian football. The 25 years old forward was Labasa’s top scorer in 2019 with twelve goals and helped them to win two trophies through the year: Battle of the Giants in August and Inter-District Championship in October.

It is Labasa’s best season ever and a successful campaign comes from a comitted and united squad. “Season with Labasa was really great. It is really a friendly place My teammates are not just teammates. They are brothers to me on and off the field they are always there for me” said Kubu to Oceania Football Center.

Battle of the Giants (BOG) was surely the most special title for him. It was his first trophy for Labasa and he was the final’s hero by scoring the winning goal in the final against his former team Lautoka. “It is a blessing for me, my family, and all fans”, he stated.

Babasiga Lions faced a very difficult moment in the season when they had to play some matches a few days after winning BOG. According to Kubu some players had familiar commitments after this tournament and were not able to play some Premier League matches, specially against Ba and Lautoka in August.

If Labasa could not qualify for 2020 OFC Champions League, they still had time to make some more history in 2019 by winning Inter-District Championship after beating Suva in the final match. “Inter-District Championship Final was exciting. We were told by our coach Roneel Lal to enjoy the game and remain focused on winning”. They won with an incredible extra-time goal scored by Dennis Ifunaoa.

Kubu is living the best moment o his career and people think he might have an opportunity in the National Team. He feels blessed for this but pondered: “That’s what people think but Fiji National Team head coach might know I might lack something… but if I get a chance I surely can do the job on the field”. He has never played for National Team.

With 2019 coming to its end it is time to make plans for 2020 and choose the next steps for his career. He asserts that he really wants to score more goals and win more tournament and stated “I might stay with Labasa for next season” – very good news for Babasiga Lions fans!
