Raphael Lea’i makes history as he scores his first ever professional goal in his debut as starter in Europe

Raphael Lea’i, the 19-year-old star footballer from the Solomon Islands, has made history by becoming the first player from his country to play professional football in Europe. He made his debut as a starter for FK Velež Mostar in the m:tel Premier League, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s top-tier league, and made an immediate impact by scoring his side’s second goal and setting up the third in their 3-3 draw with FK Igman Konjic. Lea’i was included in the starting XI and showed no signs of nerves as he opened his account in the 33rd minute with a well-taken goal. He then turned provider eleven minutes later, setting up his teammate Dejanovic to score Velež’s third goal just before half-time. Lea’i’s performance earned him widespread praise and cemented his place in the team for future games. This was his first goal as a professional player and his second assist.

FK Velež Mostar currently sits fifth in the league table with 41 points and a chance to qualify for the play-off of the UEFA Conference League 2023/2024 season.
