Vanuatu Football Federation appoints Brazilian head coach to national team spot

The Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) announced the appointment of Juliano Schmeling from Brazil as the new head coach of the national senior football team – the news were confirmed by local media in Vanuatu. Schmeling, who brings a wealth of experience in both football and futsal, will also lend his expertise to the national futsal team, capitalizing on his dual qualifications.

Schmeling’s vision for Vanuatu’s football extends far beyond immediate tournaments such as the Nations Cup. He is committed to a long-term development strategy that aims to build a sustainable program, nurturing local talent and strengthening the national teams over time. His approach promises to create a robust foundation for the future of football in Vanuatu.

Before joining Vanuatu, Schmeling was at the helm of PN Marist in New Zealand. His previous stints include coaching Marist FC in the Solomon Islands and the Solomon Islands futsal national team, where he made significant contributions, including coaching the Kurukuru in FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Schmeling will be supported by a capable team comprising Robert Yalou, coach of Ifira Black Bird, as the assistant coach and Vital Bong in a supporting role. This team is expected to bring a fresh and dynamic approach to Vanuatu football, leveraging their combined expertise and local knowledge.

In addition to Schmeling, another Brazilian, Emerson Alcantara, is also serving VFF. Alcantara is responsible for the grassroots football system in the country, highlighting VFF’s commitment to building a strong foundation for future generations of footballers.

The VFF is confident that Schmeling’s appointment will herald a new era for Vanuatu football, with a focus on both immediate tournaments as the OFC Nations Cup to be played this month in Port Vila and a sustainable development pathway. Fans and players alike are eagerly anticipating the positive changes and growth that Schmeling’s leadership is expected to bring.
