Alex Saniel will return to Vanuatu United after completing his short loan spell with Caroline Springs George Cross in Australia, bringing another productive chapter of his 2026 season to an end.
The Vanuatu international finished his time in NPL Victoria in the best possible way, scoring the only goal in George Cross’ 1-0 victory over South Melbourne in the final round of the regular season.
Saniel struck inside the opening ten minutes, giving George Cross a valuable win against one of the competition’s traditional heavyweights. The result, however, was not enough to secure a place in the finals, with the club ending the campaign outside the top six.That brought the Australian season to a close and, with Saniel’s move always arranged as a loan, the striker will now return to Vanuatu United.
His time in Victoria was brief, but it added another important step to what has already been one of the standout individual seasons produced by a Vanuatu player in recent years.Saniel joined George Cross in early August after an outstanding inaugural OFC Pro League campaign with Vanuatu United. The move came after he finished as the competition’s leading scorer with 11 goals, becoming the first Golden Boot winner in league history.
His OFC Pro League campaign had already been historic from the opening round. Saniel scored the first goal ever recorded in the competition, finding the net against Bula FC at Eden Park in January, and continued to be Vanuatu United’s main attacking reference throughout the season.
He also played an important role in the club’s late push towards the semi-finals. Saniel scored four times during Vanuatu United’s Challengers Group campaign as they secured their place in the knockout phase, before eventually falling 4-0 to South Melbourne in the last four.
That made the final match of his Australian loan particularly interesting.
Months after South Melbourne ended Vanuatu United’s hopes of reaching the inaugural OFC Pro League final, Saniel faced the same opponent again in NPL Victoria and this time delivered the decisive moment himself.His goal secured all three points for George Cross and allowed him to finish his Australian stint with a match-winning contribution.
Saniel had also found the net earlier in the loan spell in a 1-1 draw against Altona Magic, showing that his goalscoring form from the OFC Pro League could translate into one of Australia’s strongest state competitions.
The loan itself had been structured with Vanuatu United’s future in mind. When the move was announced, the OFC Pro League confirmed that Saniel would return to the club for the 2027 season as Vanuatu United looked to build on their semi-final appearance in the competition’s inaugural campaign.
His return could now come with an immediate opportunity to be involved in another important moment for the club.
Vanuatu United are preparing to host Central Coast Mariners in the 2026 PacificAus Sports Challenge, with two matches scheduled at Freshwater Stadium in Port Vila on 9 and 12 September.
The series will carry historic significance. It will mark Vanuatu United’s first official matches on home soil and the first time a club from the OFC Pro League faces an A-League opponent.
For Vanuatu United, getting their Golden Boot-winning striker back after a competitive spell in Australia would be a timely boost before facing one of the biggest tests in the club’s short history.
Saniel’s 2026 has already taken him through several important milestones: the first goal in OFC Pro League history, the inaugural Golden Boot, a semi-final run with Vanuatu United and then a move into Australian football.
He now returns to Port Vila after proving capable of making an impact outside the Pacific as well.
At 29, Saniel is no longer a young prospect, but his performances this year have strengthened his position as one of the leading attacking players in Vanuatu football and one of the most recognisable forwards produced by the inaugural OFC Pro League.
The next challenge will come back with Vanuatu United, where the club’s home debut against Central Coast Mariners offers another major stage for a player who has already made 2026 a memorable year.
