All Whites star Callum McCowatt joins Danish champions in major transfer

New Zealand international Callum McCowatt has completed one of the biggest moves of his club career, leaving Silkeborg IF to join reigning Danish champions AGF on a contract running until the summer of 2030.

The 27-year-old attacker makes the switch after three strong seasons with Silkeborg, where he established himself as one of the most productive New Zealand players currently competing in Europe. McCowatt leaves the club with 111 appearances, 30 goals and 12 assists, having become an important figure in the Danish Superliga since arriving from FC Helsingør in 2023.

The transfer also comes after considerable interest in McCowatt during the closing stages of the window. Silkeborg sporting director Jesper Stüker confirmed that several offers had been received for the All Whites forward, while McCowatt himself had made clear that he wanted a new challenge. In the end, AGF emerged as the club able to complete the deal.

Danish reports have valued the move at around €2 million initially, with potential bonuses taking the total package to approximately €2.5 million. Neither club has officially disclosed the fee.

For McCowatt, the move represents another important step after six years in Danish football. He first arrived in the country with FC Helsingør in 2020 before joining Silkeborg three years later, gradually building a reputation as a technically strong attacking player capable of scoring consistently from advanced midfield and forward positions.

AGF football director Carsten V. Jensen described McCowatt as one of the established attacking profiles in the Superliga and highlighted his finishing ability, technical quality and understanding of the competition as important reasons behind the signing.

The move also brings European football back into McCowatt’s season.

AGF have qualified for the league phase of the 2026/27 UEFA Conference League, meaning the All Whites attacker could now feature against clubs from across Europe during the coming months. Their confirmed league-phase schedule includes matches against Gent, Egnatia, Braga, Brann, Twente and Inter Escaldes.

That adds another layer of significance to the transfer. Rather than leaving Denmark after reported interest from Major League Soccer, McCowatt has chosen to remain in a league where he is already established while moving to a club competing for domestic honours and preparing for a European campaign.

Internationally, McCowatt remains an important member of the All Whites. He has accumulated 35 senior appearances for New Zealand and was part of the national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding further experience to a career that has steadily progressed since his early years in New Zealand football.

Before moving abroad, McCowatt developed through clubs including Greenhithe, Forrest Hill Milford United, East Coast Bays and Team Wellington, while his senior career in New Zealand included spells with Western Suburbs, Auckland City, Eastern Suburbs and Wellington Phoenix.

His move to AGF therefore represents the latest stage of a journey that has taken him from New Zealand domestic football to becoming an established performer in one of Scandinavia’s strongest leagues.

McCowatt may not have to wait long for an intriguing first appearance either. AGF are scheduled to face Silkeborg this weekend, meaning his debut could come against the club he has just left.

For New Zealand football, the transfer is another positive sign ahead of the next international cycle. McCowatt is staying at a strong European level, joining the Danish champions, and will now have the chance to test himself in UEFA competition as well as another Superliga campaign.

After building his reputation at Silkeborg, the next challenge begins in Aarhus.
