Central Coast send major SIFF Super League warning with six-goal demolition of Ghupo Wantoks

Central Coast FC produced one of their most emphatic performances of the SIFF Super League season, sweeping aside third-placed Ghupo Wantoks 6-0 in a result that underlined just how dangerous the former national champions can still be.

The match was effectively decided before the interval. Central Coast overwhelmed Ghupo from the opening stages and went into half-time with an extraordinary 5-0 advantage, turning what appeared on paper to be a difficult fixture against one of the competition’s leading sides into a one-sided contest.

Raphael Lea’i was at the centre of the attacking display with a brace, while Bobby Leslie and Barrie Limoki also found the net. An own goal added to Ghupo’s problems as Central Coast repeatedly broke through their opponents during a devastating first half.

There was less urgency after the break, but that was largely because the damage had already been done. Central Coast added another goal to complete the 6-0 victory and managed the remainder of the contest comfortably, denying Ghupo any realistic opportunity to recover from a disastrous opening 45 minutes.

What makes the result particularly notable is the contrast between the teams’ positions in the standings. Ghupo entered the fixture sitting third, while Central Coast were only seventh. On this occasion, however, there was nothing in the performance to suggest that gap. Central Coast were sharper, more clinical and considerably more effective in attack, producing the kind of display capable of changing the direction of their campaign.

For a club accustomed to competing near the top of Solomon Islands football, the victory also serves as an important reminder of Central Coast’s potential. Their SIFF Super League season may not have developed as smoothly as expected so far, but dismantling one of the best-placed teams in the competition by six goals represents much more than simply collecting three points.

Central Coast now turn their attention to their next SIFF Super League assignment with renewed momentum. For Ghupo Wantoks, meanwhile, the scale of the defeat presents a very different challenge: recovering quickly after an afternoon in which Central Coast gave them virtually no room to respond.
