Tahiti claim win as Cook Islands begin new chapter on historic Rarotonga return

Tahiti began a new chapter under head coach Joël Fréchet with a 3-1 victory over Cook Islands in Rarotonga, marking a successful return to international football for the Toa Aito after more than a year away from senior international competition.

Saturday’s friendly carried significance for both nations. For Tahiti, it was their first senior international since the March 2025 FIFA World Cup qualifying defeat to New Caledonia and Fréchet’s first match since succeeding Samuel Garcia. For Cook Islands, it was an even longer-awaited occasion: their senior men’s national team was playing on home soil for the first time since 1998.

Tahiti quickly took control of the occasion through Maitere Tanerii. The AS Central Sport forward needed only six minutes to open the scoring and struck again two minutes later, completing an early brace that left Cook Islands facing a 2-0 deficit before the match had truly settled.

The two goals provided an ideal start for Fréchet and allowed Tahiti to play with the advantage for the remainder of the first half. Cook Islands, returning to international action for the first time since their 2024 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, managed to prevent further damage before the break but still went into the dressing room two goals behind.

Tahiti added their third in the 62nd minute. Honoura Maraetefau was rewarded after collective pressure from the visitors, putting the Toa Aito firmly in control and effectively deciding the contest.

Cook Islands nevertheless ensured that their long-awaited homecoming included a goal for the local supporters. Kerim Kumsuz pulled one back in the 84th minute following an indirect free-kick situation, reducing the deficit to 3-1.

There was no further comeback, and Tahiti closed out a positive first match under their new coaching staff.

The result also begins a broader rebuilding period for the Toa Aito. Their two matches in Rarotonga form part of Tahiti’s preparations towards the 2027 Pacific Games, with Fréchet using the international windows to evaluate his group and restore competitive rhythm after the national team’s long absence.

For Cook Islands, the defeat does not diminish the significance of the occasion. The match ended a 28-year wait for a senior men’s international in Rarotonga and was their first international fixture of any kind in 747 days. It also represented the beginning of a new cycle under Rhys Ruka, who has been appointed to lead the national team through to 2028.

Neither side will have to wait long for another opportunity. Cook Islands and Tahiti meet again at the CIFA Complex on Wednesday, September 30, giving Fréchet another chance to develop his new-look Toa Aito and the hosts an immediate opportunity to respond in front of their home supporters.
