Dogalau dominates in the air as Ba edge Lautoka 2-1 in IDC opener

Etonia Dogalau once again proved decisive for Ba against their western rivals, scoring both goals as the Men in Black defeated Lautoka 2-1 in their opening match of the 2026 FMF Inter-District Championship at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

It was a derby decided entirely in the air. Dogalau scored both of Ba’s goals with headers, while Lautoka’s Luciano Orzo also headed home the Blues’ only goal after an excellent delivery from Epeli Leiroti. In a tight contest where neither side managed to pull away, Dogalau’s presence inside the penalty area ultimately separated the teams.

Ba took the advantage through their imposing forward, who positioned himself well inside the box and beat the Lautoka defence in the air to put the Men in Black ahead. Lautoka, however, responded rather than allowing their rivals to take control. Leiroti found space to deliver from the flank and Orzo attacked the cross, directing his header beyond the goalkeeper to bring the Blues back into the contest.

The equaliser ensured the traditional western derby remained finely balanced, but Dogalau was not finished. The Ba striker again made his aerial strength count, rising for another header and restoring the Men in Black’s advantage. This time Lautoka could not find another response, allowing Ba to protect the 2-1 scoreline and begin their Group B campaign with three important points.

Dogalau’s brace continues a remarkable recent record against Lautoka. He scored twice when Ba defeated the Blues 4-1 in the Fiji Premier League in July and was on target again with a header in Ba’s 3-1 Battle of the Giants victory over Lautoka in September. With another two goals at the IDC, Dogalau has now scored five times across Ba’s last three meetings with their western rivals.

There is also an IDC connection between Dogalau and this particular rivalry. When Ba last lifted the Inter-District Championship in 2023, Lautoka were their opponents in the final at the same HFC Bank Stadium. Dogalau was among the scorers that night as the Men in Black won 2-1, making his latest performance another important chapter in a fixture in which he has repeatedly delivered.

For Ba, the victory is especially valuable in a short group stage where teams play on consecutive days. The Men in Black share Group B with Lautoka, Navua and Nadi, meaning there is little room to recover from an opening defeat.

Lautoka showed enough to remain dangerous, particularly through the combination of Leiroti and Orzo, but the opening contest belonged to Dogalau. In a match where every goal came from a header, Ba had the player who won the aerial battle twice — and that was enough to give the Men in Black the perfect start to their IDC campaign.
