Bula FC have announced the signing of Australian-New Zealand defender Michael Boffey for the 2027 OFC Professional League season, bringing in a player with experience across three countries as the Fijian franchise strengthens its squad ahead of its second campaign in Oceania’s professional competition.
The 23-year-old centre-back arrives from Bentleigh Greens SC, where he spent the 2026 season competing in Australia’s National Premier Leagues Victoria. According to the club’s announcement, Boffey made 21 starts and accumulated 1,856 minutes of competitive football during the campaign.
Standing at 187cm, Boffey is a left-footed defender capable of operating on the left side of a central defensive partnership or in a back three. His arrival gives Bula another option in defence as the club looks to build on its third-place regular-season finish and qualification for the Top Four playoffs during the inaugural OFC Professional League.
“I’m super excited! It’s a massive opportunity for me personally and something I’ve been working towards for a very long time,” Boffey said following the announcement.
“I’m looking forward to getting over to Fiji, meeting the boys, all the staff, and competing in the OFC Pro League next season.”
Boffey’s football career has taken him through several different environments. He spent time in Spain with FC Málaga City U19 before progressing to CD Almuñécar City, where he was part of a team that secured a league title and promotion in 2022.
He subsequently moved to the United Arab Emirates, representing Dubai City FC and gaining senior football experience before returning to Australia.
His Australian career has included spells with Dandenong Thunder, Northcote City, Preston Lions and Bentleigh Greens. He was also part of the Preston Lions squad that secured promotion to NPL Victoria, adding another achievement to a career that has involved football at different competitive levels.
Boffey believes those experiences have contributed to his development, particularly his technical abilities in Spain and his defensive qualities in Australian football.
“Playing in different countries has helped me mature a lot, both as a footballer and as a person,” he explained.
“Spain helped me develop the technical side of my game and helped me become more comfortable in possession, while the UAE exposed me to a different style of football in a very physical league.”
“Coming back to Australia and playing NPL football has probably helped me most defensively and physically, so I feel like I’ve taken something valuable from every environment I’ve been in.”
The defender describes himself as an aggressive and proactive player who enjoys taking responsibility at the back. His ability to defend one-on-one, compete aerially and contribute to attacking build-up play were among the qualities highlighted in Bula’s announcement.
The prospect of competing professionally in Oceania was a major factor in his decision to join the Fijian club.
“The opportunity to play professional football in a growing competition was a pretty big attraction for me,” Boffey said.
“From the conversations I had with my agent and the club, I really liked the direction, the foundation and ambition around the team’s standards and culture.”
Although Boffey has spent much of his football career outside the Pacific Islands, he has family connections to the region through his New Zealand-born father. He also visited Fiji during his childhood and recalled positive experiences of the country and its culture.
His arrival represents a new addition to Bula FC’s preparations for 2027, following the confirmed contract renewals of Kaïlé Auvray, Thomas Dunn and Ryan Naresh.
While those announcements have focused on retaining members of the inaugural squad, Boffey’s signing introduces a player who has developed outside the OFC Professional League and will be looking to establish himself in a new football environment.
The defender has set his sights on becoming a regular presence in the team and contributing to a successful second season.
“My personal goals for the 2027 season are to make a big contribution to the team with my presence at the back,” he said.
“Alongside my teammates and staff, I also want to help bring silverware to the Fijian community by the end of the season.”
After reaching the Top Four playoffs in their first campaign, Bula FC will be aiming to challenge for further honours in 2027, with Boffey hoping to play an important role in their defensive preparations.
