The 2026/27 Port Vila Football Association Super League Opening Cup reaches its semifinal stage on Saturday, 24 October, with Tafea FC facing reigning league champions Galaxy FC and Ifira Black Bird FC meeting North Efate United FC at Port Vila Stadium.
All four clubs advanced from the group stage unbeaten, each collecting four points from two matches. The knockout fixtures will now provide the strongest indication yet of how the leading teams are shaping up ahead of the new domestic Super League season in Vanuatu.
The opening semifinal will see Tafea and Galaxy meet at 1pm, with both clubs looking to secure a place in the competition’s final.
Tafea have enjoyed an encouraging return to the top division after winning the 2025/26 Premier League and securing promotion. They finished first in Pool A with four points, edging North Efate United on goals scored after both teams recorded one victory and one draw.
Galaxy, meanwhile, finished second in Pool B after collecting the same number of points. The reigning PVFA Super League champions secured qualification with a narrow 1-0 victory over iCount Yatel in their final group fixture.
Despite Tafea’s recent promotion, the encounter promises to be competitive, with both clubs familiar with one another from previous tournament meetings.
Tafea player Albert Moise highlighted that familiarity ahead of the semifinal, explaining that the teams had already faced each other in two finals during the year.
Moise believes those encounters have provided Tafea with a good understanding of Galaxy’s qualities and expressed confidence in his team’s preparations for the return to Super League football.
He also encouraged Tafea supporters to attend the match wearing the club’s red and dark blue colours.
Galaxy’s Kensi Tangis expressed similar determination ahead of the contest, acknowledging the quality of their opponents while emphasising his team’s ambition to reach another final.
Tangis said Galaxy respect Tafea but intend to produce a strong performance to secure qualification. He also called on supporters to attend the match wearing the club’s blue, red and white colours.
The fixture represents an important early challenge for both teams. Galaxy will be looking to maintain their position among Port Vila’s strongest clubs, while Tafea have an opportunity to demonstrate that their successful Premier League campaign can translate into results against established Super League opposition.
The second semifinal, scheduled for 3pm, brings together Ifira Black Bird and North Efate United.
Ifira advanced as Pool B winners after recording one victory and one draw, finishing ahead of Galaxy on goal difference. Their opening match against the defending league champions ended 1-1, with Silvain Tenene giving Ifira the lead before Andrew Malakai equalised for Galaxy.
North Efate United also collected four points from their two group matches, beginning with a 1-1 draw against Tafea before securing qualification with a 2-1 comeback victory over Naka FC on 17 October.
Naka had entered that encounter needing a victory to progress, while North Efate required only a draw. However, North Efate recovered from falling behind to claim all three points and eliminate their opponents.
The result demonstrated the team’s resilience and secured a semifinal meeting with an Ifira side that has consistently competed among the leading clubs in Port Vila football.
Ifira Black Bird player John Welwel Wohale welcomed his team’s progression to the knockout stage but acknowledged that the encounter against North Efate United would be difficult.
Wohale emphasised that every participating club had prepared seriously for the tournament and that reaching the semifinals did not guarantee an easy route to the final.
He also appealed to the local community to support Ifira Black Bird, encouraging supporters to attend the match wearing the team’s green and yellow colours.
North Efate United’s Quinton Tawia also expressed satisfaction with his team’s qualification while recognising the challenge posed by their opponents.
Speaking to Port Vila Football Focus, Tawia said North Efate’s players were pleased to have reached the semifinals against Ifira Black Bird, one of the leading clubs in the PVFA competition.
He acknowledged that the encounter would not be easy and appealed to North Efate supporters to come to the stadium wearing orange and black.
The comments from both teams reflect the competitive nature of the second semifinal, with Ifira seeking to maintain their status among Port Vila’s leading clubs and North Efate looking to build on their comeback victory against Naka.
The two semifinals will bring together four teams that completed the group stage without defeat. Tafea and North Efate United finished level on four points in Pool A, while Ifira Black Bird and Galaxy achieved identical points totals in Pool B.
Naka and iCount Yatel were eliminated after losing both of their group matches.
The Opening Cup forms part of the Port Vila Football Association’s preparations for the 2026/27 domestic season, with the Super League championship expected to begin in November.
The competition also represents a change from previous preseason arrangements. According to PVFA president Harry Atisson, the traditional opening tournament had been organised under the Have Vanuatu Made Cup name during recent seasons, before the association assumed responsibility for the current edition.
With four unbeaten teams remaining and two places in the final at stake, Saturday’s matches should provide an important early test of the clubs’ ambitions for the forthcoming Super League campaign.
The first semifinal between Tafea and Galaxy kicks off at 1pm at Port Vila Stadium, followed by Ifira Black Bird against North Efate United at 3pm.
