An extraordinary eleven-goal encounter and another commanding performance from defending champions Central Coast FC highlighted Wednesday’s action in the 2026 Solomon Islands S-League, with KOSSA snatching a dramatic 6-5 victory over Honiara City and Central Coast defeating Southern United 5-1 at Lawson Tama Stadium.
The two rescheduled fixtures produced 17 goals between them, delivering one of the most entertaining midweek programmes of the season while strengthening Central Coast’s position in the championship race.
KOSSA’s meeting with Honiara City provided the afternoon’s biggest drama, with the two teams exchanging goals throughout an unpredictable contest that was eventually decided deep into stoppage time.
Honiara City made the stronger start, opening the scoring in the eighth minute before doubling their advantage in the 20th.
However, KOSSA responded impressively, scoring twice within four minutes to draw level at 2-2 after half an hour.
The contest continued at a remarkable pace, and Honiara City regained the lead in the 44th minute to enter the halftime interval with a narrow 3-2 advantage.
KOSSA needed just five minutes after the restart to equalise again, bringing the score to 3-3 and setting up an increasingly unpredictable second half.
The visitors eventually moved ahead for the first time in the 73rd minute, taking a 4-3 lead and appearing to have turned the match in their favour.
However, Honiara City were far from finished.
Two goals in the space of four minutes, arriving in the 82nd and 86th minutes, completed another dramatic reversal and put Honiara City ahead 5-4 as the match entered its closing stages.
With time running out, KOSSA produced an extraordinary response of their own.
An equaliser in the 88th minute restored parity at 5-5 before a sixth goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time completed a remarkable comeback and secured all three points.
The final whistle confirmed a 6-5 victory for KOSSA, who had recovered from two goals down in the opening half and then overturned another deficit in the dying moments.
For Honiara City, the result was particularly painful. Despite scoring five times and leading with only minutes remaining, they were unable to prevent another defeat.
KOSSA, meanwhile, collected their seventh victory of the campaign in spectacular fashion, recovering from Sunday’s defeat against Ghupo to strengthen their position in the middle of the standings.
The day’s other encounter carried greater consequences for the championship race, as Central Coast produced an emphatic 5-1 victory against Southern United.
Facing one of the competition’s most productive attacking teams, the defending champions established control during the opening half, scoring twice to take a 2-0 advantage into the interval.
Southern United had an opportunity to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot shortly before halftime, but failed to convert.
Central Coast maintained their momentum after the restart and extended the lead to 3-0 in the 61st minute, placing their opponents under increasing pressure.
Southern United eventually found a response in the 72nd minute, reducing the deficit to 3-1 and briefly raising hopes of a comeback.
However, Central Coast needed only four minutes to restore their three-goal advantage, scoring again in the 76th minute to make it 4-1.
The defending champions completed their impressive afternoon with a fifth goal from the penalty spot during stoppage time, sealing a convincing victory against opponents who had entered the match on the back of consecutive league wins.
The result underlined Central Coast’s attacking strength and demonstrated their ability to overcome one of the teams competing near the top of the standings.
It also preserved their unbeaten record in the 2026 championship, with the defending champions now recording nine victories and two draws from eleven matches.
Central Coast moved to 29 points, just three behind leaders Green Shield, who have collected 32 points from fourteen fixtures.
The difference in matches played remains significant, with Central Coast holding three games in hand and therefore possessing an opportunity to move ahead of their title rivals.
For Southern United, Wednesday’s defeat interrupted a productive period in which the club had been collecting important victories, while also exposing the difficulty of containing Central Coast’s attack.
The midweek results have added further interest to the next round of S-League fixtures.
Green Shield are scheduled to face Southern United on Saturday, 31 October, while Central Coast will return to action against KOSSA the following day.
Those fixtures will bring together the four clubs involved in Wednesday’s contrasting stories: Central Coast looking to continue their unbeaten campaign, KOSSA aiming to build on their dramatic comeback, Southern United seeking a response and Green Shield attempting to protect their narrow advantage at the top.
For now, Wednesday’s matches will be remembered for two very different performances: KOSSA’s astonishing late escape against Honiara City and Central Coast’s ruthless display against Southern United.
