Former Auckland City goalkeeper Nathan Garrow made an impressive first-team debut for Stellenbosch FC in South Africa, keeping a clean sheet as his new club defeated Durban City 2-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup on Wednesday, October 28.
The 21-year-old New Zealander was named in the starting line-up by coach Gavin Hunt for the Round of 16 encounter at Chatsworth Stadium, marking his first competitive appearance for Stellenbosch since joining the club on a permanent transfer from Auckland City in July.
Garrow had to remain alert during a goalless first half, with Durban City creating opportunities despite neither team managing to break the deadlock. The former Navy Blues goalkeeper was tested by substitute Samkelo Maseko, who replaced the injured Gaston Sirino early in the match.
One of his most important contributions came six minutes after the restart, when Haashim Domingo unleashed a powerful long-range effort that forced Garrow into an excellent diving save. The young goalkeeper also dealt with further attempts as Durban City looked to take the lead.
Stellenbosch eventually broke the deadlock in the 84th minute through Sinoxolo Kwayiba, who finished a cross from substitute Lateef Kazeem. With Durban City pushing forward in search of an equaliser, the visitors took advantage of the space left behind, allowing Kwayiba to complete his brace in stoppage time and secure progression to the quarter-finals.
The debut represents another important milestone for Garrow, whose career has progressed considerably since his performances for Auckland City at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. He made a series of saves against Benfica before producing another memorable display in the Navy Blues’ 1-1 draw with Argentine giants Boca Juniors, helping the New Zealand club secure a historic result.
Born in Cape Town, Garrow moved to New Zealand with his family when he was just one year old. His development took him through clubs including Manukau United, Bay Olympic and Auckland United before he joined Auckland City, where he established himself as one of the club’s leading goalkeepers.
During his time at Kiwitea Street, Garrow also gained experience in the OFC Men’s Champions League. His first appearance in the continental competition came against AS Pirae in March 2025, when he saved a penalty in Auckland City’s 1-0 victory. He later helped the club secure the New Zealand National League title before making the move to South Africa.
His transfer to Stellenbosch offered an opportunity to begin a full-time professional career while returning to the country of his birth. Having spent the opening months of the South African season waiting for his chance, Garrow made the most of his first appearance, helping Stellenbosch reach the last eight of the domestic cup competition.
The young goalkeeper will now look to build on that performance as he competes for further opportunities in one of Africa’s leading domestic football leagues.
