Papua New Guinea National Soccer League: Which Clubs Might Be Taking Part?

The kick-off of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League is just around the corner, with the start date tentatively expected to be 16th November. But which teams might we be seeing battle it out for supremacy at the top level of football in PNG? Here’s what we know already:

Please note: none of the below clubs have confirmed participation. This article is purely speculation based on rumours and the information that we already know.

Lae City FC

It is extremely likely that we will see the five-time reigning champions back for the 14th edition of the National Soccer League. The club, which has never failed to win a title in their five years of competing at this level, announced recently that their name would be reverting back to Lae City FC from Toti City FC due to FIFA and OFC regulations ahead of their participation in the 2019/20 OFC Champions League. This would also suggest that they are well underway with their preparations for the new domestic season as well, and we expect them to be one of the first names on the club list.

Hekari United

News surfaced this week that manager Jerry Allen is returning to eight-time champions Hekari United after half a season managing Marist FC in the Solomon Islands. Given that Hekari have been involved in the competition in eleven of its thirteen seasons – with the two missing being during the league split from 2017 to 2018 when they were involved in the rebel National Premier League – this news only goes to confirm the idea that we will see Hekari once again battling it out amongst the elite.

Morobe Wawens

The third-placed side from two seasons ago had a disappointing time last year, failing to make an impact on the OFC Champions League and finishing seventh out of eight sides in the Northern Conference of last year’s NSL. However, according to an article in the Post Courier last week, the team have already started trials for the forthcoming season, with the intention of taking part in the NSL. Whether or not they’ll be in the Premier Division or the Conference system remains to be seen.

West Tribe FC have been in training since the end of September. Photo: West Tribe FC

West Tribe FC

No official reports have mentioned West Tribe’s participation this season just yet, but last season’s quarter-finalists have been making noises over on their Facebook page. The club began training at the end of September, and have since been relatively active on the social media scene. This of course has no bearing on whether they’re taking part in the NSL, but photos and training sessions suggests they’ve been preparing for something.

Tusbab Stallions

They may not have had the best debut season last time out, finishing bottom of the Northern Conference, but Tusbab Stallions have an unusually international team supporting and sponsoring them, and a huge focus on youth. Their affiliate amateur club, Tusbab Blue Kumuls, won the Madang Soccer Association regional title earlier this year, so the potential is there, and the team appears ready to come back stronger this time around.

FC Bougainville

Another club with a local affiliate, FC Bougainville have also been making noises on social media, having given their logo a bit of a sprucing up and having already announced that they’ll have a side in the Women’s NSL. Their affiliate side, FC Mungkas, won the National Club Championship earlier this year, so expect them to be a strong presence in the league if they do decide and get picked to be involved.

Madang FC in 2017. Photo: Sylvester Gawi

Madang FC

After their surprise absence last season, a return for Madang FC is not completely out of the question. A report from last year suggested that the reason for their absence was due to a withdrawal of funding from the provincial government, so whether or not this funding will be regained remains to be seen. However, the side was a notable loss to last year’s competition, and several fans online bemoaned their absence on social media. Will that be enough to see them come back?

…and the rest?

It would be difficult to imagine a season with last year’s semi-finalists, Morobe United and Eastern Stars. Morobe have been third on five occasions, including last year, while Eastern Stars made a successful return last year after a four-year absence. Smaller sides from the Highlands and Islands don’t have a great social media presence, so we’re left guessing as to whether other quarter-finalists Kagua-Erave, Chebu AROB and Blue Kumuls (Mt Hagen) will be taking part. Stalwarts Besta PNG United will probably be there or thereabouts, while the fates of former FFPNG rebels Markham FC, Laiwaden FC, Lahi FC and Gulf Komara are yet to be determined.

OFC Futsal Nations Cup: a flogging day

OFC Futsal Nations Cup begun yesterday in New Caledonia. Four matches were played in the opening day of the tournament. Come with Oceania Football Center and check what happened in this first day of competition.

SOLOMON ISLANDS 13-2 TONGA

Favourite Solomon Islands did their job and beat Tonga unfailingly. Elliot Ragomo and Jeffery Bule scored four goals each to lead Kurukuru to this large win. Despite the loss Tonga made history. Soakai Vea scored the Tongan Senior Futsal Team first ever goal in an official match. Legendary Unaloto Feao scored the other Tonga’s goal – We scored two goals and I’m really happy with that” – stated Tonga’s head coach Manu Tu’alau. Solomon Islands leads the group and they are now focused in correcting some mistakes for next challenges – “I’m happy with the player’s approach to the game but of course the first game is always a getting over that excitement and that anxiety as well […] Tonga is a very physical team and it was a good test for us to see our strenght and condition program is working” – said Kurukuru’s head coach Vinicius Leite. Solomon Islands faces Tahiti in the next game while Tonga will play against Fiji.

NEW ZEALAND 9-0 AMERICAN SAMOA

American Samoa was not as “lucky” as Tonga to score some goals in their official debut in Senior Futsal but at least they managed to suffer “just” nine goals of a strong New Zealander side. Great Dylan Manickum scored a hat-trick to push himself to the Golden Boot award race. Head Coach/Player Marvin Eakins netted once and said: “We are just happy to get the win and the performance against a pretty spirited American Samoan team that did well, they could have got a couple of goals and I think they would have deserve that”. American Samoa had a very young starting five except the experient goalkeeper Nicky Salapu. Despite the loss head coach Tunoa Lui is happy “We came into this tournament knowing that New Zealand is the best team in our pool and I take my hats off to the boys, they gave a good fight, it’s just some mistakes we really need to work on, because it could have been different in terms of the result of the game”. New Zealand will face Vanuatu in the next game while American Samoa is going to play against New Caledonia.

FIJI 1-11 TAHITI

Fiji was not a threat for Tahiti. The francophones played an incredible match and did not give a chance to Fiji show why they came to this tournament. Legendary Teaonui Tehau scored four goals showing that he can be a great scorer in Futsal too. Fiji goal was scored by captain Setareki Hughes. “Even though it was the first match we had to get in to the game really quickly because we know that this result was important” said Tahiti’s head coach Jean-Baptiste Barsinas. Tahiti faces Solomon Islands in a very important game while Fiji will play against Tonga looking for a win to recover in the competition.

VANUATU 1-11 NEW CALEDONIA

Vanuatu started the match showing that they could be a threat for New Caledonia but it did not materialize. New Caledonia had an easy life against the Ni-Van Futsal Team and they now have one and a half foot in the semifinals. Christ Pei scored three goals for the francophone side. New Caledonia head coach Juliano Schmeling said it was an important result but he advises “We need to concentrate for tomorrow and we need to fix some details from today’s game”. Jerry Allen heads back to Hekari United

Marist FC coach in Telekom S-League 2019 season, Jerry Allen is probably going back to Papua New Guinea to be Hekari United’s head coach for one more season.

The Papua New Guinean National Soccer League is expected to begin in late November while 2020 OFC Champions League group stage is scheduled to be played in February.

Jerry Allen’s information. Source: Marist FC official facebook page

Marist is currently in the fourth place in S-League’s table with twelve points in eight matches. Hekari United is one of the most important teams of Oceania. They have one Oceania Champions League’s trophy won in 2010.

Siotame Kubu: a hero’s tale

Siotame Kubu had an amazing year in Fijian football. The 25 years old forward was Labasa’s top scorer in 2019 with twelve goals and helped them to win two trophies through the year: Battle of the Giants in August and Inter-District Championship in October.

It is Labasa’s best season ever and a successful campaign comes from a comitted and united squad. “Season with Labasa was really great. It is really a friendly place My teammates are not just teammates. They are brothers to me on and off the field they are always there for me” said Kubu to Oceania Football Center.

Battle of the Giants (BOG) was surely the most special title for him. It was his first trophy for Labasa and he was the final’s hero by scoring the winning goal in the final against his former team Lautoka. “It is a blessing for me, my family, and all fans”, he stated.

Kubu celebrating his goal in Battle of the Giants final against Lautoka

Babasiga Lions faced a very difficult moment in the season when they had to play some matches a few days after winning BOG. According to Kubu some players had familiar commitments after this tournament and were not able to play some Premier League matches, specially against Ba and Lautoka in August.

If Labasa could not qualify for 2020 OFC Champions League, they still had time to make some more history in 2019 by winning Inter-District Championship after beating Suva in the final match. “Inter-District Championship Final was exciting. We were told by our coach Roneel Lal to enjoy the game and remain focused on winning”. They won with an incredible extra-time goal scored by Dennis Ifunaoa.

Kubu is living the best moment o his career and people think he might have an opportunity in the National Team. He feels blessed for this but pondered: “That’s what people think but Fiji National Team head coach might know I might lack something… but if I get a chance I surely can do the job on the field”. He has never played for National Team.

With 2019 coming to its end it is time to make plans for 2020 and choose the next steps for his career. He asserts that he really wants to score more goals and win more tournament and stated “I might stay with Labasa for next season” – very good news for Babasiga Lions fans!

S-League – Weekend Review

KOSSA VS ISABEL UNITED (POSTPONED)

Just like last weekend against Malaita Kingz, Kossa match was postponed because they have eight players and their head coach currently representing Solomon Islands National Teams.

LAUGU UNITED 0-5 SOLOMON WARRIORS

Solomon Warriors beat Laugu United by 5-0 and is the new leader of Telekom S-League overcoming Henderson Eels with nineteen points in seven matches. Kaltack now has eleven goals and still leads the Golden Boot race.

MARIST 2-1 MALAITA KINGZ

A vital win for Marist and a terrible loss for Malaita Kingz. Bobby Lesley scored twice to take Marist to the fourth place in the table. Guadalcanal wins the “bottom derby” and now has three points in the table while Real Kakamora remains in ninth place with zero points. John Junior Kovila was the key player for Guadalcanal scoring a brace to give them their first win in this S-League season.

Magenta beats Hienghène and keep their chances to win Mobil Super Ligue

🇫🇷 Lire en français ici

The 16th round of Mobil Super Ligue, the first tier of football in New Caledonia had very important clashes and the current most important derby of the country: Hienghène against Magenta. The task of Magenta was not easy for this round: they needed to win the match against the current champions of OFC Champions League to keep their chance to retain the Mobil Super Ligue title. Hienghéne had won all previous three matches they played against Magenta – including the continental club final – and the Nouméa club had their most important player, Richard Sele, out due injury.

Hienghène – with only three matches remaining in the season – did not record any defeat in the national league: the task for Magenta was really not easy, a draw would mean the Mobil Super Ligue title would go for the team based in the north of New Caledonia. Magenta challenge turned into a much more harder quest when Brice Dahité scored in the first minute of the match with a long-range shot thanks to huge mistake of Magenta stopper Steve Ixoéé.

Hienghène kept attacking lead by their captain Bertrand Kaï and had possibilities to increase their lead. But at the 22th minute of play, after a defensive mistake by Hienghène defense, Kevin Nemia was allowed to finish with a powerful shot – the shot was deflected and gave no chance to the goalkeeper Rocky Nyikeine. The equalizer gave a morale boost to the home side that start to pursue a second goal.

The first half ended with not many chances to score for both teams. The 1-1 score was enough for Hienghène to secure their third trophy of the 2019 season. The team coached by Alain Moizan knew they needed to find a second goal and win the match to keep their title chances alive.

The second half started with a lively Magenta looking for the so needed goal. Hienghène was reduced to 10-men after the defensive midfielder Cédric Sansot received his second yellow card – Magenta turned so to dominate the match and Hienghène focused to keep the match as a draw, the result they needed to take the title home.

Roy Kayara had an impressive match; his experience helped his side to hold the result. An impressive Rocky Nyikeine made some magnificent stops, especially in a free-kick taken by Shene Wélépane. Unfortunately, their efforts were not enough to hold Magenta pressure: at the 92th minute of match, a perfect counter-attack by the some side found Kevin Nemia unmarked inside area in front of the goalkeeper, the New Caledonian international made no mistake and found the nets for his second time in the match for the joy of the local fans.

To make the things even harder for Hienghène, their star goalkeeper Rocky Nyikeine was forced to save a wrong back pass by Erwan Ausu with his hands – the defender did not realised Nyikeine was out of his goal and his pass was too heavy for the keeper to bounce back and he needed to use his hands. For this reason Nyikeine was shown a red card and is not going to feature in the next Hienghène Sport match.

16th round results – MSL Media

In other matches of the round, ES Wacaele could collect a very important win against their direct rivals against relegation Trio Kedeigne. Horizon Patho and SC Ne Drehu had shown why they are so close in the standings and draw at Stade de La Roche in a 2-2 result.

AS Mont-Dore kept their dissapointing campaign in the season with a 2-0 defeat against Tiga Sport at Stade Numa Daly in the first match of the Sunday. A fantastic goal by Ludwig Zeoula was not enough for AS Lössi to secure all the points of the match against AS Wetr, that could fight back with and find an equalizer in a late penalty scored by Christopher Wacalie.

The updated standings of Mobil Super Ligue after 16th round – MSL Media

Hienghène Sport kept their lead despite losing their first match in the league. They still need just one win in the two remaining matches to secure the Mobil Super Ligue title. Magenta kept in the run; they need to win both of their remaining matches and hope that Hienghène does not win in the last two remaining rounds.

The points difference in the table from AS Wetr – 3rd placed team – remains only of two to AS Lössi that stands at the 8th place. The match AS Mont-Dore vs. Trio Kedeigne is still in dispute to and the referees commission is expected to have a decision soon.

The very important win for ES Wacaele made them to swtich positions in the table with Trio Kedeigne – now the Lifou based team is at the bottom of the table and if it remains they will be directly relegated to New Caledonian Ligue 2 while ES Wacaele will have the chance to play a playoff of relegation-promotion to decide their fate in the New Caledonian football system.

Phoenix suffers third defeat in a row

Western United, Sydney FC and now Perth Glory is the side that defeats Wellington Phoenix in their three first matches at 2019/20 A-League season. The experience of the 37-year old midfielder Diego Castro made a crucial impact for the game result.

Phoenix starting XI; Scott replaces Cacace and Hooper starts in bench – Phoenix Media

The English marksman Gary Hooper was expected to be in the starting eleven for the Phoenix, but started in the bench. Walter Scott was selected by head coach Ufuk Talay to replace the suspended Liberato Cacace.

Phoenix started very well the match, pressing high the current A-League Premiers and having several corners that could not end up in any result for the home side. Despite their efforts, it was to be the Uruguyan Bruno Fornaroli to score the first goal of the match: after a superb play by Diego Castro, the veteran just rolls the ball for Fornaroli to find the nets of Stefan Marinovic at the 11th minute.

The goal surprised Phoenix that was having offensive approach in the starting minutes of the game. The defense of the home side seemed fragile since the goal suffered. The South Korean Kim Soo-beom had the perfect chance to increase the lead but was denied by a magnificent effort by Stefan Marinovic. Marinovic also needed to make another terrific save in a header of Bruno Fornaroli – keeping the scoreline 1-0 and his team alive in the game.

A defensive mistake at the 33th minute allowed Bruno Fornaroli to receive the ball inside area, the defense does not clear it away, the Uruguayan flicks back to area and finds Chris Ikonomidis, that with a powerful finish does not give a chance another save by Marinovic: Glory now ahead by 2.

Ikonomidis scored Glory second goal – Glory Media

The first half ended with a 2-0 advantage for Glory. The Perth side controlled the first half after scoring – Phoenix could not do much to challenge their control in the opening half of the game.

The second half started with a Nix decided to cut the deficit and the attacking third was much more occupied by the home side. The time for Hooper was coming, but Ufuk Talay decided to keep him for the final fifteen minutes. Phoenix created decent chances to score, especially with the Mexican midfielder Ulisses Dávila. The striker David Ball also was lively for the home side alongside his attacking partner Jaushua Sotirio.

Talay introduced Reno Piscopo in the place of Alex Rufer and in the final fifteen minutes finally Gary Hooper made his debut in place of Callum McCowatt. Ben Waine was also introduced in the game in place of Jaushua Sotirio. The pressure of Phoenix continued, but the scoreline kept the same until the 95th minute, when after a crossing David Ball flicks the ball to Hooper that is pushed by Dino Djulbic inside area – the referee pointed to the penalty spot. The effort of Phoenix resulted in a goal too late – Dávila took the penalty perfectly and reduced the scoreline to 2-1.

The final scoreline; one more defeat for Phoenix

With another loss in the competition – all three matches of the season – Phoenix situation starts to worry their fans. They will need a positive result in their next match at AAMI Park in Melbourne against Melbourne City, next Sunday at 6pm NZT.

Gary Hooper introduction in the game, from the few chances he had to make impact, could provide a good signs of his quality: created a good chance for Ben Waine and suffered the penalty that Dávila scored. The expectations to see more of the new import striker in the next matches can increase the chances of better results for Wellington Phoenix.

Phoenix is the unique team in the league that is yet to draw or win a match, staying at the bottom of the page – 11th place – with 5 goals conceced and 2 goals scored, both from Ulisses Dávila.

Uninspired New Zealand is defeated by African debutants

Today New Zealand started their campaing at the 2019 U17 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and Estádio Bezerrão did not see a good performance by the Young All Whites – surely the coach Jose Figueira is not happy from what he has seem from his team.

New Zealand faced Angola at their opener – the first tournament the African team play at this level. Before having a promising free-kick upfront in the early minutes, the Kiwis left a gap in their right side and that allowed a decent cross that ended up in a header of striker Zini – that Alex Paulsen could not stop. The Angolans were 1-0 ahead very early in the match, exactly at the 6th minute of play.

Zini celebrates his goal

New Zealand was denied a penalty at the early twenty minutes of the game after Angolan goalkeeper pushed a New Zealand offensive player in a corner inside area. The Chinese referee of the match was called to the VAR but decided to not give the penalty to the OFC U16 Champions.

The New Zealanders not created much in the first half and Angola had the best opportunities to increase their lead. In the second half the Kiwi side seemed much more lively and the midfielder Marko Stamenic was the responsible for the creation of various important chances.

After a superb play at the 54th minute, Matthew Garbett nutmegged the defender and after battiling for the ball, it deflects and go to the right side of the Angolan goalkeeper to equalize the match.

Matthew Garbett celebrates his goal for New Zealand – NZF Media

The New Zealand side got morale boost for finaly equalizing the match and seemed to be more comfortable with the ball. Unfortunately for them, after a corner accidentaly the full back Harry Bark sent the ball to his own nets to give to the vibrant Angola their lead back.

Jose Figueira tried to introduce new players to the pitch but New Zealand never seemed to be the same. The players lost concentration and could not keep the possesion. Angola had plenty of chances to increase their goal advantage but were denied by the best New Zealand player of the game: the goalkeeper and captain Alex Paulsen. The goalkeeper was safe during the entire match – just could not stop the two balls the went to his nets, both of them which he could not do anything to avoid the goal.

The Young All Whites had a clear chance to finish the game with at least one point in the injury time, in a 1v1 situation the New Zealand striker was stopped by the Angolan goalkeeper that saved his side to suffer the equalizer.

The New Zealand side will have a very tough match on the next Wednesday at 12am NZT against the home side Brazil that today defeated Canada by 4-1 margin at the other Group A match.

Distance derby might be Hooper debut for Phoenix

The distance derby is always an important part of Wellington Phoenix – specially when their opponents are the current premiers of A-League. Perth Glory made a superb season in 2018/19, topping the A-League regular season and playing a very attractive football. Andy Keogh, Chris Ikonomidis and Diego Castro made fantastic combinations all over the season – unfortunately for Glory the Scottish Keogh departed to play in Saudi Arabia, but we can really say they could find a suitable substitute: former Melbourne City striker Bruno Fornaroli.

Fornaroli, the new Glory signing for the season

The Uruguyan has a proven goalscoring record at A-League and surely can harm Wellington Phoenix if they do not take care of him. Not only Fornaroli can be threat: the Soceroos member Chris Ikonomidis made a very good season for the premiers and already scored this season in the past two games of Glory – both ending in a 1-1 draw. Ikonomidis also adds experience of playing European football in Italy.

The Westpac Stadium will probrably see the debut of their new marquee striker, the English Gary Hooper. The former Norwich City player turned into the biggest hope of goals for this season after the announcement of ther signing. After Roy Krishna, David Williams and Sarpreet Singh departures, the Wellington-based club was desperate to find a proven goalscorer and their bet is going for a highly experienced one in the best football leagues of the European continent.

Hooper, the new striker of Wellington Phoenix – Stuff

The distance derby has its name due the high distances both teams have to play each other – the biggest in the league. From Perth to Wellington we have the huge distance of 5.255 km and this is the road Glory will make to face the Nix this Sunday at Westpac Stadium.

Both Glory and Wellington are seeking for their first win in the season – Phoenix lost their first two matches to Western United and Sydney FC while Perth Glory draw both their matches. Despite of playing a very interesting football against Sydney last Sunday, the unlucky Phoenix could not prevail and stop the current champions to defeat them by a 2-1 margin. Ulisses Davila turned himself in the first Mexican to ever score in A-League and added the first of what the Phoenix fans hope to many to their goal account in the 2019/20 season.

After a reckless challenge, the young full back Liberato Cacace will be missing this match and the next one of the Phoenix. The 19-year old New Zealand international stepped on the leg of Sydney FC Anthony Caceres and was sent off with the help of VAR. A-League referee comission added one more week ban to the All Whites member and created a new problem for the head coach Ufuk Talay to resolve.

Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory will play at 6pm NZT and all movements of the match will be telecasted by SkySport and streamed at MyFootball YouTube channel.
