Still in the first half Melbourne found themselves a lifeline as Socceroos‘ star Jamie McLaren found the Dutch midfielder Richard van der Venne in the middle of the box to finish it past Danny Vukovic. The current premiers cut the deficit and expected to find an equaliser in the second half.

Melbourne could not do different as they pushed forward in the early stages of the final 45 minutes. Brian Kaltak and his partner in defense Nectar Triants made a number of clearances, alongside All Whites’ members Storm Roux and James McGarry in the back four. With the introduction of the youngster Jacob Farrell in place of McGarry, Mariners got a lot of speed in their left flank and it paid off in the first touch of the wing back on the ball as he was brought down in the box by Andrew Nabbout. With an easy penalty call for referee Chris Beath, the striker Jason Cummings made no mistake from the spot kick to restore the two-goal margin for the Mariners.

New Zealand bows out to strong United States at U-20 World Cup’s Round of 16

In an exciting Round of 16 match in the U20 World Cup, the United States secured a commanding 4-0 victory over New Zealand. The Junior All Whites faced a formidable opponent in the United States, whose superior technical quality proved to be too much for the Kiwis to handle. Although New Zealand had a promising early chance on a counterattack, with Jay Herdman testing the USA goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina, it was the only real threat they managed to create throughout the game.

The deadlock was broken early in the 14th minute when Owen Wolff’s shot found the back of the net. The New Zealand goalkeeper, Keems Sims, misjudged the trajectory of the ball, mistakenly assuming it would go out of bounds. Instead, it nestled into the bottom corner of the net, giving the United States the lead. Despite this setback, New Zealand continued to battle, with Sims making some impressive saves, including denying a well-executed finish by the United States following a corner.

In the second half, the United States further asserted their dominance by adding three more goals to their tally. Cade Cowell received a superb pass inside the 18-yard box and calmly finished past Sims to double the lead. Later, in a well-executed counterattack, Diego Luna showcased his skill as he went past Norman Garbett, and Cowell, after dribbling past the goalkeeper, delivered a precise cross into the penalty box. The initial clearance was made, but Justin Che was quick to pounce on the rebound and extend the lead to three goals.

In the 81st minute, another error from Sims proved costly for New Zealand. A free-kick was crossed into the box, and Sims misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Rokas Pukštas of Hajduk Split to head it home and make it 4-0 for the United States.

Despite the disappointment of the heavy defeat, New Zealand should be proud of their campaign in the tournament. This was the fourth time the Junior All Whites reached the Round of 16, matching their best-ever performance. However, they were unable to progress further on this occasion. The United States, on the other hand, maintained their strong form and continued their journey into the quarterfinals. Notably, they remained the only team in the tournament yet to concede a goal, highlighting their defensive solidity and overall strength.

Georges Gope-Fenepej makes New Caledonia proud reaching another feat in French Football

🇫🇷 Français

Georges Gope-Fenepej is one of the most successful Pacific Islanders in Oceania football history, just like Roy Krishna, his compatriot Jekob Jeno, Marama Vahirua and Brian Kaltak, he left the Pacific Islands to turn into professional football player. In Gope-Fenepej’s case he left for France after making history as he helped his New Caledonian national team to eliminate New Zealand for the first time in the 2012 OFC Nations Cup – ultimately losing the grand final to Tahiti by 1-0.

In France he already went to big stages: ESTAC Troyes was his first stop, being the first player to have worn the jersey of the New Caledonia national team to play in Ligue 1, the top-tier of French football. The striker kept himself in Troyes for two seasons and a half where in the period he was loaned to US Boulogne before moving to Amiens in 2015. At Amiens he achieved the incredible feat of climbing with the team from the National (third division) to Ligue 1, participating in the team’s entire journey. He then moved to Le Mans where he again achieved promotion from the National to Ligue 2.

Now at 34 years of age the New Caledonian legend has written another great chapter in his carreer by helping Concarneau win the Championnat National and getting then promoted to Ligue 2 for the first time in its history, after joining the club back in 2021.

Gope-Fenepej (right) playing for Concarneau this season – Concarneau Media

In the current season Gope-Fenepej has played 18 of a possible 34 games contributing with one assist and starting 29% of the matches. He became the third player born in New Caledonia to win a title in France, after icons Christian Karembeu and Antoine Kombouaré who played for the French national team when there was no national team in the archipelago.

At 34 years of age it will take us a while to know what will be the fate of his career now, whether he will continue at Concarneau even though he lost a lot of space in the team at the end of the season, whether he will look for another club in the National or if even a return to his homeland in on the cards.

The Oceania Football Center congratulates Gope-Fenepej for his brilliant career and achievement, and may he inspire more players from New Caledonia and the Pacific Islands to pursue their goals in becoming professional football players.
