New Zealand suffers comeback against Norway in Women’s Algarve Cup

In the 3rd place match contest in the Algarve Cup held in Portugal, New Zealand could not defend their lead and suffered a heartbreaking comeback against the strong European side of Norway.

Norway got beaten by the powerhouse Germany in the semifinals while New Zealand could not hold the good side of Italy – both sides had a final match in the contest for a honorous bronze-medal, that unfortunately did not come for the Oceanian side.

The powerful striker Hannah Wilkinson scored the first goal of the encounter at the 10th minute of play. Unfortunately for the Football Ferns the lead did not last long as Synne Jensen equalized for Norway minutes later Wilkinson’s opener.

New Zealand hold the 1-1 draw until the the 86th minute of play when Caroline Graham Hansen scored the winner for the Scandinavians, guaranteeing the 3rd place for Norway in the tournament.

New Zealand continues their preparations for Tokyo 2020 as the Ferns are qualified for the Olympic Women’s Football tournament.
