Green Shield stay clear as KOSSA and Ghupo keep winning in error-strewn S-League weekend

Green Shield strengthened their position at the top of the Solomon Islands S-League with another victory at Lawson Tama Stadium, while KOSSA and Ghupo continued their own impressive runs in a weekend in which defensive and goalkeeping mistakes had a major influence on the results.

Three completed fixtures produced three narrow victories on Saturday, with KOSSA defeating SOSA 3-2, Green Shield edging Malaita Kingz 1-0 and Ghupo overcoming Marist 3-2. The results moved Green Shield to 19 points from eight matches, while KOSSA and Ghupo both reached 12 from seven, keeping themselves within sight of the early leaders.

For Green Shield, the latest three points came in a very different manner from some of their more convincing performances this season. Malaita Kingz kept the leaders scoreless for most of the contest and appeared on course to take something from the match before Green Shield found the decisive goal late on. The breakthrough, however, owed plenty to a goalkeeping mistake, with the Malaita goalkeeper failing to deal cleanly with an aerial ball and presenting Green Shield with the opportunity that ultimately settled the game.

It was not Green Shield at their most dominant, but it was another example of a team finding a way to collect points even when the performance did not produce the same control seen in previous victories. The most chaotic contest of the weekend came between Marist and Ghupo. Ghupo eventually emerged with a 3-2 victory, their third successive league win following victories over Laugu United and Honiara City, but the five-goal match contained a succession of errors from both teams rather than being a clean attacking display.

Marist’s opening goal came directly from a misplaced pass by a Ghupo defender, allowing the opposition to punish an unnecessary mistake in the defensive third. Goalkeeping was another major feature of the contest, with uncertain handling and several poor attempts to punch balls clear contributing to a match that remained open and unpredictable. Both teams were able to create danger from situations that might otherwise have been comfortably dealt with, and Ghupo were ultimately the side that made better use of the opportunities presented to them.

That should not diminish the importance of the result for Ghupo. The club’s season has attracted considerable attention following a difficult opening period and the controversy surrounding the team, but results have now changed the conversation. The 3-2 win against Laugu, the midweek 2-1 victory over Honiara City and Saturday’s success against Marist have produced nine points in quick succession, taking Ghupo back into the upper part of the table. KOSSA are enjoying an even longer winning sequence. Their 3-2 victory over SOSA followed wins against Honiara City, Ghupo and Southern United, giving them four consecutive league victories after an inconsistent beginning to the campaign. The remarkable 5-4 success against Southern United had already demonstrated their attacking threat, and another three goals against SOSA kept their momentum going.

The table consequently gives Green Shield a sizeable advantage, but it still does not provide a complete picture of the championship race. Defending champions Central Coast have played only two league matches because of their continental commitments and the resulting backlog of postponed fixtures. While Green Shield have already completed eight games, Central Coast remain on six points from just two, meaning several catch-up matches will eventually have a major effect on the standings.

For now, however, Green Shield have done what the teams around them have not: consistently put points on the board. KOSSA and Ghupo are beginning to provide genuine pressure after their respective winning runs, but the latest weekend also exposed an issue visible across several S-League matches — basic defensive decisions and goalkeeping errors continue to have an outsized influence on results.

Green Shield may not have produced their most convincing football against Malaita Kingz, and Ghupo’s latest victory was anything but controlled. What matters in the standings, though, is that both found a way to win. As the S-League schedule gradually becomes more balanced and Central Coast begin to recover their postponed matches, that ability to turn imperfect performances into three points could become increasingly important.
