New Zealand teenager Jack Perniskie has taken the most significant step yet in his move to English football, making his senior debut for MK Dons only a few months after leaving the Wellington Phoenix pathway.
The 18-year-old forward was introduced late in MK Dons’ 4-1 EFL Trophy victory over Crawley Town on September 22, earning his first competitive senior minutes for the League One club.
It was a relatively brief appearance, but an important one for a player whose progress in England has accelerated considerably since arriving during the offseason.
MK Dons made nine changes for the EFL Trophy fixture and were already in control by the time Perniskie entered the match. Ben Wiles and Jack Sanders had given the hosts a 2-0 halftime lead before Elijah Campbell and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy added further goals in the second half.
The comfortable situation allowed MK Dons to introduce several younger players, with Perniskie among those given the opportunity to experience senior football.
For the New Zealander, the appearance continued a progression which began during preseason.
Perniskie had been playing for Wellington Phoenix’s reserve side in the Central League shortly before emerging with MK Dons during preparations for the 2026/27 English season.
His introduction was immediately encouraging.
In MK Dons’ opening preseason friendly against Maidenhead United, Perniskie played the second half and scored shortly after the restart before also contributing an assist in a 4-1 victory.
He was subsequently included in the club’s preseason training camp in Croatia and continued to receive exposure around the senior group.
Since then, much of his football has come within MK Dons’ development structure, but the EFL Trophy presented his first opportunity in a competitive senior fixture.
The transition is particularly notable considering Perniskie is still only 18.
Born in January 2008, the forward came through the Wellington Phoenix academy system and was one of New Zealand’s attacking prospects before departing for England.
He also represented New Zealand at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup, appearing in all three matches and scoring against Saudi Arabia.
His move to MK Dons has therefore taken him from youth international and Central League football into the environment of an English Football League club within a matter of months.
There remains a significant distinction between an EFL Trophy appearance and establishing himself as a regular League One player. Perniskie has yet to appear in a League One matchday squad, and development-level football is still likely to account for much of his playing time.
However, his trajectory since arriving in England has been encouraging.
A preseason goal and assist were followed by continued involvement within the club and now a competitive senior debut.
MK Dons’ next EFL Trophy fixture, against Brentford U21 on October 6, could offer another opportunity for the club’s younger players.
For Perniskie, the larger objective will be to continue closing the distance between development football and the first team.
At only 18, he has now cleared the first major hurdle: becoming a senior footballer in England.
