Labasa could hardly have asked for a more dramatic beginning to their 2026 FMF Inter-District Championship campaign. The Babasiga Lions defeated hosts Suva 2-1 at HFC Bank Stadium, with veteran Christopher Wasasala producing a magnificent late winner to secure three crucial points from one of the most difficult fixtures in Group A.
The significance of the result goes beyond an opening victory. Labasa arrived at the IDC after several late changes to their squad, while Suva entered the tournament strengthened by a number of New Zealand-based players and with every Super Premier match being played in the capital. In a group also containing defending champions Rewa and BOG semifinalists Nasinu, dropping points on the opening night could immediately have placed either side under major pressure.
Simione Ragoneturaga gave Labasa the lead in the 22nd minute after a close header but Suva showed why they had been considered one of the dangerous teams coming into the competition; one of their overseas additions, Andrew Naicker, found the net against Labasa and gave the hosts a major boost in a contest that remained closely fought with the teams eventually locked at 1-1 during the second half.
Labasa, however, refused to allow the match to escape them. The Babasiga Lions worked their way back into the contest and, with the score still level as the match approached its conclusion, the possibility of both sides beginning the tournament with a point looked increasingly likely.
Then came Wasasala.
With the match entering its dying moments, the experienced Labasa attacker produced the piece of quality that separated the teams. Wasasala unleashed a superb strike that left Suva with no response, turning what appeared destined to be a draw into a 2-1 victory for the northerners. The Fijian international lobbed the goalkeeper almost from the middle of the park.
It was exactly the type of contribution Labasa needed from one of their most experienced players. Wasasala has repeatedly delivered in Fiji’s major tournaments, and his importance has increased further with Labasa entering this IDC without several players initially expected to be part of their campaign. Before the tournament, OFCe had already identified him as one of the players capable of carrying greater attacking responsibility in the absence of some of Labasa’s usual options. The winner was also an important reminder of what Wasasala can still provide in decisive moments. It was not simply another goal added to his record; it came with the match balanced, against the tournament hosts, and at the stage when there was virtually no time for Suva to recover.
For Suva, the defeat is particularly painful because their performance had kept them in contention until the closing moments. Naicker’s impact showed the value of their overseas reinforcements, while the Capital City side had enough attacking quality on the field to trouble Labasa. But tournament football is often decided by individual moments, and this one belonged entirely to Wasasala.
For Labasa, the three points could be extremely valuable. Group A was widely considered the more difficult of the two Super Premier pools before the tournament began, with only two places available in the semi-finals. Defending champions Rewa underlined that difficulty earlier in the day by demolishing Nasinu 5-0.
That makes Labasa’s opening victory even more important. Rather than beginning their campaign chasing the group after a difficult opening fixture, the Babasiga Lions now carry three points into their next challenge against Rewa.
It will be an immediate test against the defending champions and the team that produced the most convincing performance of the opening day. But Labasa will enter that match with momentum, confidence and the knowledge that even when a game appears to be slipping towards a draw, they still possess a player capable of producing something extraordinary.
On opening night, that player was Christopher Wasasala — and one magnificent late strike was enough to turn a tense contest into a huge 2-1 victory for the Babasiga Lions.
