Rewa book semifinal place as Navua frustrate Ba and Lautoka roar back into IDC contention

The second day of the 2026 FMF Inter-District Championship brought the first confirmed semifinalist, a major response from Lautoka and two draws that have left qualification battles alive heading into the final round of the Super Premier group stage.

Defending champions Rewa produced the strongest statement of Wednesday’s action at HFC Bank Stadium, defeating Labasa 3-0 to move onto six points and become the first side officially through to the semifinals. Elsewhere, Lautoka recovered from their opening defeat against Ba by dismantling Nadi 5-2, Suva and Nasinu shared the points in a 2-2 draw, while Navua came from behind to hold Ba 2-2.

It means that after two matchdays Rewa are the only Super Premier side whose place in the knockout stage is secure. The Delta Tigers have also emerged as arguably the most convincing team of the competition so far, scoring eight goals without conceding across their opening two matches.

Rewa 3-0 Labasa: defending champions take control

Rewa entered the second matchday following their emphatic 5-0 opening victory against Nasinu, but Labasa represented a very different test. The Babasiga Lions had beaten hosts Suva 2-1 on the opening night through Christopher Wasasala’s late winner and knew another victory would put them in a commanding position in Group A.

For the opening 45 minutes, Labasa managed to contain the defending champions. The match remained goalless at halftime, considerably different from Rewa’s first game, when they had already established control against Nasinu.

The breakthrough finally arrived after the interval through Josaia Sela, and once Rewa found the opening their attacking quality began to tell. Merril Nand struck twice as the Delta Tigers pulled away to complete a 3-0 victory.

Nand’s brace continued an outstanding individual start to the tournament. He had already scored twice in the 5-0 victory over Nasinu, taking his IDC tally to four goals from only two matches.

More importantly for Rewa, the result guaranteed their progression with one group match still remaining. The defending champions have six points, eight goals scored and none conceded, an impressive beginning to their attempt to retain the IDC crown.

Their final Group A match against Suva therefore carries no qualification pressure for Rewa, although first place remains important ahead of the semifinal draw. For Suva, however, the situation could hardly be more different.

Suva 2-2 Nasinu: Feni double not enough for the hosts

Suva and Nasinu entered their meeting knowing that another defeat would leave their campaigns in serious trouble after both had lost on the opening day.

It was Suva who struck first, and once again Gagame Feni demonstrated why he remains one of the most decisive Solomon Islands players in Fijian football. The veteran attacker opened the scoring in the 38th minute to send the hosts into halftime ahead.

Nasinu, however, refused to disappear from the contest. Jone Rupeni equalised in the 67th minute, setting up a frantic period in which three goals arrived in the space of only seven minutes.

Feni restored Suva’s advantage in the 71st minute with his second goal of the match, but the hosts were unable to protect it. An own goal three minutes later brought Nasinu level at 2-2, and neither side could find the decisive fifth goal.

The draw keeps both teams alive, although neither controls its own situation heading into the final round. Labasa remain on three points after their defeat to Rewa, while Suva and Nasinu have one apiece.

That places enormous importance on Thursday’s matches. Nasinu face Labasa before Suva meet Rewa in the final Super Premier game of the group stage. Labasa have the advantage, but the second semifinal position remains open.

For Feni individually, his brace was another reminder of his remarkable longevity. After scoring for Suva during the recent Battle of the Giants, the Solomon Islands international has again delivered on one of Fiji’s biggest domestic stages.

Lautoka 5-2 Nadi: Blues produce the response they needed

Few teams entered Wednesday under greater pressure than Lautoka.

The Blues had lost 2-1 against Ba on the opening day, making their second Group B match against Nadi close to a must-win contest. Their response was emphatic.

Lautoka won 5-2, with Epeli Leiroti, Luciano Orzo, Rusiate Matererega and Sterling Vasconcellos among the scorers, while Nadi’s Vishant Reddy also put through his own net. Aabid Mohammed and Eneriko Matau scored Nadi’s two goals.

Orzo therefore found the net for the second consecutive match after also scoring Lautoka’s goal against Ba, while Vasconcellos returned to district football with an important contribution after being part of Fiji’s successful MSG Prime Minister’s Cup campaign.

The result completely changes Lautoka’s position in the tournament. Instead of entering the final day simply trying to stay alive, the Blues now face Navua in a match with direct implications for the semifinal places.

For Nadi, meanwhile, the situation has become extremely difficult. They have conceded eight goals across defeats to Navua and Lautoka and still have to face Ba in their final group match.

Ba 2-2 Navua: Drova denies the Men in Black late

The most dramatic contest of the second matchday came between two teams that had started the tournament with victories.

Ba entered the IDC carrying the possibility of completing an extraordinary sweep of Fiji’s major domestic honours after already winning the 2026 league, Fiji FACT and Battle of the Giants. Navua, however, had provided one of the surprises of the opening day by comfortably defeating Nadi 3-0.

Ba initially appeared ready to take control.

Nabil Begg headed the Men in Black in front before John Orobulu added another shortly before halftime. Orobulu’s goal continued his excellent 2026 campaign and appeared to put Ba in a commanding position.

Navua responded before the break through Simione Damuni, ensuring that the contest remained alive at 2-1.

The complexion of the second half changed further when Fiji international Ryan Naresh received a second yellow card, reducing Ba to ten men. Navua began applying increasing pressure, with Thomas Dunn among those threatening as an effort struck the crossbar.

Ba nevertheless remained only minutes away from securing another victory before Navua captain Peniame Drova intervened.

Drova found space late in the match and drove his finish beyond Misiwani Nairube to make it 2-2, rescuing a point for Navua and preventing Ba from becoming the first Group B side to secure qualification.

The result leaves Ba and Navua level on four points after two matches. Navua currently carry the superior goal difference following their 3-0 opening victory over Nadi, while Lautoka sit close behind after their five-goal response on Wednesday.

It sets up an intriguing final day.

Navua face Lautoka in what effectively becomes a direct battle for qualification, while Ba take on a Nadi side still searching for their first point. Ba remain strongly positioned, but the draw means their semifinal place is not yet mathematically secured.

Rewa set the standard as qualification goes to the final day

Two days into the IDC, the defending champions have established the clearest benchmark.

Rewa have followed a 5-0 victory over Nasinu with a 3-0 win against Labasa. Eight goals scored, none conceded and six points represent an almost perfect start to their title defence.

That form is particularly significant given the narrative surrounding Ba before the tournament. The Men in Black arrived in Suva as the dominant force of the 2026 Fijian season, chasing a fourth major trophy after winning the league, Fiji FACT and Battle of the Giants. Rewa, however, have so far looked every bit like a side capable of defending their IDC crown.

Behind them, very little has been settled.

Labasa remain best positioned to accompany Rewa from Group A, but their defeat has opened the door for Suva and Nasinu. In Group B, Ba and Navua have four points, with Lautoka back in contention after their emphatic recovery against Nadi.

Thursday’s final group matches — Navua against Lautoka, Nasinu against Labasa, Nadi against Ba and Rewa against Suva — will determine the remaining three semifinalists.

After a second matchday featuring 19 goals across four Super Premier matches, only Rewa can approach the final round knowing that their place in the knockout stage is already secure. The rest of the field still has work to do. Estilo-de-Escrita
