Gulf Komara retain Papua New Guinea Premier Soccer League title after impressive second-half comeback

PRK Gulf Komara FC have been crowned champions of Papua New Guinea’s 2026 Premier Soccer League, securing their second consecutive national title after finishing the 22-round competition with 50 points, two ahead of PNG Hekari FC. The Gulf Province representatives also secured qualification for the 2027 OFC Champions League, returning to the continental stage after another successful domestic campaign.

Komara completed the season with 16 victories, two draws and four defeats, scoring 46 goals and conceding 21. Their final record reflects an impressive recovery after an inconsistent first half of the competition, when they occupied fourth place with just 19 points from 11 matches, behind Lae City, Port Moresby Strikers and PNG Hekari.

However, the defending champions transformed their campaign during the second half of the season. Komara remained unbeaten across their final 11 league fixtures, recording ten victories and one draw to collect 31 points from a possible 33. Their only dropped points during that period came in a 2-2 draw against title rivals PNG Hekari on August 19, a result that proved particularly important in a championship ultimately decided by just two points.

The impressive run included victories over Port Moresby Strikers, Morobe Wawens, Madang United and Kula FC. Komara also defeated Admiralty Island 2-1 in their Round 22 fixture before completing a rescheduled match against Lae City on September 21, winning 2-1. By the end of their campaign, they had established an advantage that none of their closest competitors could overcome.

Unlike the previous season, the 2026 Premier Soccer League did not feature semifinals or a Grand Final, with the Papua New Guinea Football Association adopting a traditional league format in which the team finishing with the highest number of points would be crowned national champion.

The change is particularly significant considering how Komara secured their maiden championship in 2025. After finishing second in the regular-season standings, the club advanced through the playoffs, defeating Hekari United 3-0 in the semifinals before overcoming Morobe Wawens 3-1 in the Grand Final on December 14.

Lae City, meanwhile, had finished unbeaten at the top of the 2025 regular-season standings with 50 points, but were eliminated by Morobe Wawens in the semifinals. Despite missing out on the national championship, Lae City’s position as minor premiers secured them Papua New Guinea’s place in the 2026 OFC Men’s Champions League.

The different competition formats mean that Gulf Komara have now won consecutive national championships through two distinct routes: first by winning the Grand Final in 2025, and then by finishing at the top of the league standings in 2026.

PNG Hekari finished runners-up this season with 48 points, having recorded 15 wins, three draws and four defeats. According to the final standings announced by the PNG Football Association, Lae City secured third place with 46 points, followed by Port Moresby Strikers on 45.

The PNGFA also confirmed the distribution of prize money, with Gulf Komara receiving K200,000 alongside the championship trophy and gold medals. PNG Hekari collected K150,000 for finishing second, while Lae City received K100,000 and Port Moresby Strikers K50,000.

For Komara, retaining the championship represents another important achievement for a club that has steadily established itself among Papua New Guinea’s leading football sides. Having lost the 2024 national final against Hekari United before claiming their first title the following year, the Gulf Province outfit has now demonstrated its ability to maintain success across consecutive seasons.

Their next major challenge will come in the 2027 OFC Champions League, where Komara will have the opportunity to test themselves against leading clubs from across Oceania, carrying the confidence of back-to-back national championships into continental competition.
