Moffat Konofilia backs young GHUPO squad for S-League title challenge despite rebuilding difficulties

GHUPO FC head coach Moffat Konofilia believes his young squad can compete for the SIFF S-League title despite losing several experienced players, while expressing concerns about refereeing standards and the challenges faced by his emerging talents in the Solomon Islands’ top division.

In an exclusive interview with Oceania Football Center, Konofilia discussed his first season in charge of GHUPO, a club competing in its second year in the S-League. The coach has been tasked with developing a largely inexperienced squad after several senior players departed for other clubs, both domestically and overseas.

“This is my first year with the team. Most of my senior players […] have moved on to other clubs, both locally and overseas,” Konofilia explained.

“I’ve got my new talent players coming through,” he added, describing the squad as “a very young team.”

The rebuilding process has required patience, particularly as younger players adjust to the demands of senior football. Nevertheless, Konofilia believes the progress made since the opening round has been encouraging, with his players gradually becoming more comfortable with the physical intensity and pressure of the competition.

“They are doing well so far. A lot of them have improved,” he said, also observing that “the boys are starting to pick up.”

When asked about the players who have impressed him most, Konofilia identified Lucian Sade So’oga, Absolom Wawane, Jackson Wale, William Arofa and Enoch Poloso among GHUPO’s standout performers this season.

Despite the improvements, the coach acknowledged that the relative inexperience of his squad remains a significant obstacle. He pointed to the physical demands of the league as one of the biggest difficulties for his younger players, who are still adapting to competition against more established opponents.

However, his concerns extend beyond the performances of his own players. Konofilia also expressed dissatisfaction with certain refereeing decisions, arguing that officiating has presented another challenge during GHUPO’s campaign.

He specifically referred to an incident against Malaita Kingz in which one of his players received a red card. Konofilia questioned the severity of the punishment, arguing that the incident did not warrant a dismissal.

While recognising that there are capable referees working in the S-League, he believes the quality of officiating has been inconsistent. He acknowledged that “there’s some good ones” among the match officials, but maintained that other decisions have negatively affected his team.

Nevertheless, Konofilia is not prepared to abandon GHUPO’s championship ambitions. Asked whether his team could finish at the top of the standings, he expressed confidence in their ability to remain competitive as the season progresses.

“We have a big chance,” he declared, before emphasising: “We have a very big chance of winning the league.”

The coach believes GHUPO can strengthen their position by addressing their weaknesses and continuing the development demonstrated by the squad over recent matches. His confidence reflects an ambition to achieve immediate results rather than simply use the season to prepare younger players for the future.

Konofilia also discussed his tactical philosophy and the broader challenges facing clubs from the Pacific Islands when competing against stronger regional opposition.

He highlighted Auckland City as an example of a club with an established footballing identity, referring to the New Zealand side while discussing the importance of tactical organisation and the approach required to compete successfully at a higher level.

“We’re trying to play direct football,” he explained, connecting that approach to his observations of football in New Zealand and the wider Pacific region.

His comments suggest that establishing a recognisable style of play is an important part of his work at GHUPO, alongside developing young players capable of meeting the physical and tactical demands of senior competition.

For Konofilia, the challenge is to turn individual improvement into consistent team performances. With several emerging players gaining experience and the coach maintaining his belief in the squad’s potential, GHUPO will continue pursuing their ambitions in the SIFF S-League despite the difficulties encountered during the rebuilding process.
