Maikah Dau stays with Bula FC for 2027 as second U-17 World Cup awaits

Extra Bula FC have confirmed that 17-year-old Fiji international Maikah Dau will remain with the club for the 2027 OFC Professional League season, securing the services of one of the country’s most promising young footballers. The announcement comes as the Nasinu midfielder prepares to represent Fiji at his second consecutive FIFA U-17 World Cup, which begins in Qatar later this month.

Dau was the youngest player in Bula FC’s inaugural professional squad and made an immediate impression when he started alongside Roy Krishna in the club’s opening 2-2 draw against Vanuatu United at Eden Park in January. At just 16, he became the youngest player to feature in the competition, gaining an opportunity that few Fijian footballers of his age had previously experienced.

His decision to continue with Bula FC follows a year of significant development, during which he progressed from professional football to the senior national team and contributed to Fiji’s historic MSG Prime Minister’s Cup triumph.

“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to continue my journey with Bula FC next season. I’m really excited and can’t wait to be back on the pitch with the boys,” Dau said following the announcement.

One of the most important influences on his development has been Fiji captain Roy Krishna, who played alongside Dau’s father, former international defender Lorima Dau, during his own national team career.

Krishna previously described the youngster as a special talent, praising his technical abilities, attitude and willingness to learn. Now Dau has acknowledged the importance of having the experienced striker alongside him during his introduction to professional football.

“Roy has influenced me the most. Being one of the youngest in the squad, I’ve learnt a lot from him. He’s helped me become more confident and calmer during games,” he explained.

The relationship illustrates the generational transition taking place in Fiji football. Krishna, now 39, has spent much of his career competing professionally overseas, while Dau represents a younger generation benefiting from the establishment of the OFC Professional League and expanded international development opportunities.

Dau’s progression has also been evident at international level. After captaining Fiji at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, he earned his first senior appearances in June 2026 before representing the country at the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship in Samoa.

His breakthrough continued during the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup in September, when he scored against Solomon Islands in a 3-3 draw and subsequently delivered the winning goal in Fiji’s 2-1 comeback victory over New Caledonia. That decisive strike, scored in the 66th minute, secured Fiji’s qualification for the final, where they defeated Vanuatu 1-0 to claim their first Melanesian title since 2000.

For the teenager, being involved in that achievement was particularly meaningful, but the demands of professional football have also taught him that further progress requires sacrifices.

“My biggest lesson was that to become a professional player, you need to sacrifice a lot. Playing in a professional environment has taught me to think faster because the game moves so quickly,” Dau said.

Those lessons were reinforced in October when he travelled to New Zealand alongside Ryan Naresh and Sterling Vasconcellos to train with Auckland FC through the OFC Player Placement Programme. The experience exposed the trio to the training standards and intensity of an established A-League club.

Dau identified quicker decision-making and greater composure in possession among the improvements he has made, although he acknowledged that receiving the ball under pressure remains an area requiring further work.

His immediate priority now shifts to the international stage. Having already experienced the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2025, Dau has been selected for the 2026 tournament, where Fiji will face Spain, Morocco and China PR in Group H.

The Junior Bula Boys are preparing for the competition with a pre-tournament training camp in the United Arab Emirates before travelling to Qatar. Their second consecutive World Cup appearance will provide Dau with another opportunity to test himself against players from some of the world’s leading football nations.

Following the tournament, attention will return to Bula FC’s preparations for the 2027 professional campaign under head coach Stéphane Auvray, who also guided Fiji to the recent MSG Prime Minister’s Cup title.

The club has been assembling a new squad combining established internationals, overseas recruits and emerging Fijian players, with Dau’s renewal ensuring that one of its youngest members remains part of the project.

For the midfielder, the objectives are to become more comfortable on the ball, continue developing technically and contribute towards a stronger campaign.

“My personal goal is to become sharper on the ball and keep improving in areas that will help the team. I’m determined to contribute in any way possible to help us win the championship this season,” he said.

With another World Cup approaching and a second professional season secured, Dau has an opportunity to build on an unusually eventful start to his senior career. For Bula FC, retaining the teenager is another step towards developing young Fijian talent within a professional environment.
