The Vanuatu national team captain Brian Kaltak is going to be one of the leaders of his Central Coast Mariners this Sunday (05th May) as they take on Al-Ahed from Lebanon in the grand final match of the AFC Cup – the second most important club competition of Asian continent.
After a long road, Mariners see themselves on the verge of their first ever international title – only the second of a Australian team since they left Oceania Football Confederation to play in Asia. Kaltak’s side beat Kyrgyzstan’s Abdysh-Ata Kant in the two-legged semifinal before heading to take on Al Ahead that won Oman’s side Al-Nahda in the same stage.
In the mid-week Mariners celebrated the top-placed side of the A-League season earning themselves the Premier’s Plate of the 2024/25 season after 12 years without this accolade. The season is nothing short of spetacular for the Gosford-based side and for the 30-year-old role model footballer from Vanuatu.

The grand final in the continental stage is not going to be the final action for Mariners in the season; they still have the A-League playoffs to play. The team coached by Mark Jackson has to defend the trophy of A-League as they the current title holders of the premier league in Australia.
Azariah Soromon, the dynamic Vanuatu international striker, has recently faced a significant setback in his promising football career. Known for his agility, skill, and goal-scoring prowess, Soromon suffered a devastating injury to his knee, rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This injury not only put his career on hold but also posed a serious threat to his ability to return to the sport he loves.
Hailing from Vanuatu, Soromon’s journey in football has taken him across various leagues and countries, including stints in New Zealand and Fiji before finding himself in Australia’s NPL South Australia with the Western Strikers. Despite his talent and dedication, Soromon encountered a major obstacle when he realized that the healthcare resources in his home country were insufficient to address his injury.
Facing the daunting prospect of needing specialized surgery, Soromon turned to the football community for support. With limited options available in Vanuatu, he required private surgery in Australia, a costly endeavor beyond his means. However, the football community rallied around him, recognizing his talent and passion for the game. Through crowdfunding efforts and the collective support of fellow footballers, fans, and the Vanuatu Football Federation, Soromon was able to raise the necessary funds for his surgery and subsequent rehabilitation.

As he embarks on the road to recovery, Soromon remains grateful for the outpouring of support that has enabled him to pursue his dreams once again. With his sights set on returning to football action only on February 2025, Soromon’s story serves as a proof to the power of community and solidarity within the footballing world. Through collective efforts and unwavering support, Soromon’s dream of making a living from football has been preserved, paving the way for a triumphant comeback on the pitch.
Real Kakamora, the perennial underdogs of the Telekom S-League, finally broke free from the shackles of defeat that had bound them for so long. Their journey had been one of hardship, marked by seasons of disappointment and despair, but on this fateful day, victory was theirs to savor. In the past two seasons, Kakamora had won only three matches, being the last one exactly against Kula FC by 3-2 on 09th October, 2022 – two seasons ago.
The signs were there from the outset of the season—a revamped squad, key signings, a glimmer of hope amidst the shadows of past failures. Led by stalwarts like Phillip Ropa and the influential Paul Francis, Kakamora stepped onto the pitch with renewed determination, eager to wash away the stains of their winless campaign.
Real Kakamora’s victory in the Telekom S-League against Marist FC marked a significant turnaround for the team after a season without a single win. Despite starting the season with a loss against the Warriors, Real Kakamora displayed resilience and determination in their second-round match against Marist FC.
The match saw Kakamora taking the lead in the first half with a goal from new signing Paul Francis. Marist FC, who had won their opening match against KOSSA FC, faced setbacks with two players receiving straight red cards for reckless behavior, reducing them to nine men.

Hekari United, the reigning champions of Papua New Guinea and former OFC Champions League winners, have secured the signings of two Brazilian players, central defender Erick Joe and attacking midfielder Lucas Sousa, ahead of their OFC Champions League campaign. The arrival of these two imports is expected to provide a significant boost to the Men-In-Red as they prepare to compete in the prestigious tournament.
Both Erick and Lucas were warmly welcomed by the club’s owner and general manager, Vonnie Kapi Natto, as well as the coaching staff consisting of David Muta and Ericson Komeng upon their arrival. Erick brings valuable experience to the team, having previously played for Hekari and participated in the 2020 edition of the OFC Champions League held in Port Moresby.

Having played in regional divisions in Brazil, both players bring a wealth of talent and skill to Hekari United. Their presence is anticipated to enhance the quality of the team as they aim to make a mark in the upcoming tournament.
Hekari United is set to face tough competition in the OFC Champions League, with matches against Auckland City from New Zealand, Solomon Warriors from the Solomon Islands, and Rewa from Fiji lined up in the group stage. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on 15th May in Tahiti, and Hekari fans are eager to see how their new signings will contribute to the team’s success on the field.
Solomon Warriors FC secured their second win of the 2024/25 Telekom S-League season with a 3-1 victory over Henderson Eels FC, with Japanese import Kohei Matsumoto registering his debut goal for the club in only his second match for the club.

The win sees Solomon Warriors maintain their winning start to the season, positioning them well in their title defence campaign – the team coached by Franco Ne’e registered its second win in two matches played so far.
Other matches of the day saw Real Kakamora come on top of nine-men Marist side by 4-0 while Southern United led by star striker Jonh Orobulu had no issues to beat Kossa by 5-0. In Lawson Tama a late goal from Chris Ha’atarau in the second half was enough for Laugu to get past a well drilled Wanegau FC side. Central Coast continued his peak form proving to be one the of the title contenders of the season with a impressive 5-0 win over Juniper Tree as SOSA was unable to avoid defeat to Honiara City in the final match of the day.
In a rainy night in Gosford, Australia the Vanuatu superstar Brian Kaltak achieved one more key milestone in his exceptional football career. The central defender helped his side Central Coast Mariners to win the Premier’s Plate of the 2023/24 season, a feat the club did not achieve for 12 years. The plate is awarded to the top-placed side in the A-League regular season and the Mariners achieved so after a comfortable 2-0 win over Adelaide United – Jacob Farrel and Max Ballard scored the goals of the match.
Wellington Phoenix needed the Mariners to lose the game to get the plate for their first time ever, but they ended up as runners-up as Kaltak’s side efficiently beat Adelaide in a catch up match this Wednesday (01st May) due international commitments in the AFC Cup.

This is the second trophy for Kaltak in his professional career – the first was the famous A-League title last season after a resounding victory in the grand final. Now Kaltak has a chance to help his team to earn more two accolades this season; to defend the A-League title in the play-offs and as a possible first ever international trophy for Mariners in their run at AFC Cup that will finish this weekend in Oman against Lebanese champions Al-Ahed.
In a momentous recognition of talent and dedication, Vanuatu international Brian Kaltak has been awarded the coveted title of “Coach’s Player of the Year” for his stellar performances with the Central Coast Mariners in Australia. Affectionately known as the “Brick Wall of Gosford,” Kaltak’s defensive prowess has not only secured victories for his team but has also served as a beacon of inspiration for his homeland.
This marks the second consecutive year that Kaltak has been bestowed with this prestigious accolade, a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence on the field. As a cornerstone of the Mariners’ defense, his contributions have been instrumental in the team’s success, particularly as they strive to defend their A-League title.
Currently reigning champions of the Australian top-tier league, the Central Coast Mariners are on the cusp of further glory as they aim to clinch the Premier’s Plate this midweek. A victory or draw against Adelaide United in Gosford would solidify their position on top the regular season standings, setting the stage for a triumphant campaign.

However, Kaltak and his teammates have their sights set beyond domestic triumphs. With international club football beckoning, the Mariners are set to clash with Al-Ahed from Lebanon in the grand final of the AFC Cup this upcoming weekend.
For Kaltak, this recognition not only highlights his individual achievements but also underscores the collective effort of the Central Coast Mariners. As captain of the Vanuatu national team, he carries the hopes and aspirations of his countrymen with pride, symbolizing the potential for greatness that lies within the Pacific island nation.
As Kaltak embarks on his second season with the Mariners, the trajectory of his career seems poised for even greater heights. With each accolade and triumph, he solidifies his status as a footballing icon, both in Australia and beyond. And as the Central Coast Mariners continue their quest for glory, Kaltak stands as a shining example of the power of perseverance and passion in the pursuit of excellence.
AS Pirae secured a resounding victory against Central (3-0) at Pater Stadium in a postponed match of the third round of Ligue 1 in Tahiti. Before the conclusion of the playoffs, the orange team has ensured their status as champions of Ligue 1, marking their fourth title in five years after victories in 2020, 2021, and 2022, and their twelfth title in history. Tefana had halted Pirae’s winning streak last season. The Faa’a-based team also triumphed (2-0) against Dragon on Wednesday night and currently sits in second place in the playoffs, tied on points with Venus.
Pirae’s dominance in local football over recent years has once again been confirmed this season. This dominance was challenged last season when Tefana claimed the Tahiti Ligue 1 championship title, with Pirae finishing as runners-up. It was also partially challenged this season when Tefana eliminated Pirae (1-0) in the eighth-finals of the Polynesian Cup. Faa’a’s team, emerging as Pirae’s main rival over the past two years, only succumbed in the penalty shootout in the two qualifying playoff matches for the OFC Champions League after two draws (1-1). Pirae has not had an easy ride this season, having to contend with the solid opposition of Tefana, but their championship title is well-deserved, especially considering their decisive victory (3-0) last Thursday against Tefana, which marked a turning point in the playoffs. Furthermore, Pirae has won all eight of their playoff matches so far, demonstrating that the orange team thoroughly deserves their title.

Wednesday night’s success against Central at Pater Stadium seals Pirae’s triumph, and its players did not miss the opportunity to enjoy a stress-free end to the championship. Despite the absence of three starters, Heimano Bourebare, who was ill, as well as Heirauarii Salem and Patrick Tepa, who were injured, Pirae immediately took control of the match against a rather defensive Central team. The red and black team initially struggled before regaining composure. They created the first major opportunity of the match in the 16th minute, with a shot from Hanoa Temaiana. Pirae maintained pressure but faced Central’s defense until the 32nd minute when Narcisse Xowie fouled Sandro Tau in the penalty area. Referee Norbert Hauata awarded a penalty to Pirae, which Ariiura Labaste converted to give the orange team the lead (1-0). Another penalty was awarded to Pirae ten minutes later when Désire Ngiamba was fouled in the six-yard box. Ariiura Labaste doubled the lead (2-0). Pirae maintained this advantage until halftime, with their substitute goalkeeper, Teva Durot, only having to deal with back passes.
The second half saw Central play with more rhythm, but apart from a few minutes after halftime and around the 75th minute when coach Raimoana Bennett’s team created three successive chances, Pirae calmly managed the second half by controlling the ball with occasional bursts of acceleration. Taniava Barsinas, who had come on three minutes earlier, extended Pirae’s lead (3-0) with a close-range goal.
The orange team expressed their joy with caution at the end of the match, well aware that the title had been virtually theirs since their victory against Tefana the previous Thursday. Their coach, Vatea Terai, remained measured: “I took over the team in January, and it’s therefore a great satisfaction to win the title, but I have only continued the work put in place by my predecessors. The players have shown incredible spirit, and their performances are the result of a lot of hard work. We can now calmly prepare for the Champions League, where we have big ambitions considering it’s being held in Tahiti, and we could become the first Tahitian club to win the tournament.”
The end of the Ligue 1 playoffs will lack interest, not only because the champion is already known. The runner-up position was significant as it theoretically qualified for the national playoffs of the Oceania Champions League, with Tefana and Venus competing for it. However, the Oceania Confederation recently changed the rules of the tournament, and only national champions will participate next season. Despite this recent development, Tefana still managed to win on Wednesday night against Dragon with two goals from François Moux scored in the 14th second and Tehotu Gitton (65th). Tefana and Pirae will face each other again (for the sixth time this season) next Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Louis Ganivet Stadium in a postponed match of the fourth round, a game lacking significance for both teams. Venus, no longer motivated by a possible participation in the Champions League, will host Dragon at the same time at their Mahina field.
The Vanuatu football star, captain of the national team, Brian Kaltak is very close of reaching another impressive milestone in his professional football career in Australia. The central back is just one match away from clinching the Premier’s Plate for Central Coast Mariners in the A-League, the title given to the top-placed team of the regular season of the most important club football league in the country.
The Mariners sit second in the table just one point away from the top-team Wellington Phoenix; the Gosford-based side has one match still to be played in the competition while all other teams have already completed all 27 matches of the regular season.

Kaltak and the Mariners will play at home this Wednesday (01th May) against Adelaide United and they just need to avoid defeat to celebrate the Premier’s Plate of the 2023/24 season. Drawing in points against Wellington will mean the first place is going to be decided on which of the two sides have won more in the season – Mariners registered 16 wins while the New Zealanders got 15.
Kaltak already helped Mariners win the A-League finals last season and will play the Grand Final of the AFC Cup in the upcoming weekend against Lebanon’s side Al-Ahed – a superb season so far for Mariners and a memorable stint for the Vanuatu star in Gosford.
Fijian football sensation Roy Krishna’s journey with Odisha FC has come to an abrupt end in India after his team suffered a heart-wrenching defeat in the semi-final clash against his former team, Mohun Bagan.
The second-leg encounter between Odisha FC and Mohun Bagan unfolded at the Kalinga Stadium with Odisha trailing 2-1 from the first leg. However, hopes were high for Krishna and his teammates to turn the tide and secure a spot in the final. Despite a valiant effort from Krishna, who featured for the entire game, Odisha failed to muster their usual impact against a determined Mohun Bagan side.
The match saw Mohun Bagan seize control early on, with Jason Cummings breaking the deadlock in the 22nd minute by capitalizing on a rebound in the box, sending shockwaves through the Odisha camp. Despite Odisha’s resilience, Mohun Bagan continued to press forward, creating a barrage of scoring opportunities.
As the game approached its climax, Mohun Bagan’s Sahal Abdul Samad delivered the final blow, finding the back of the net in the 93rd minute, sealing a 2-0 victory for his side.
