Suva clinch Vodafone Premier League’s title in Fiji

The 2020 Vodafone Premier League season came to an end as the final four matches of the season were contested this weekend – two on Saturday and two on Sunday – to decide the final positions in the tournament.

As it was previously reported, Nasinu were relegated after a heavy loss to Navua while Labasa defeated Ba by 2-1 at Subrail Park on Saturday. The final showdown was set for Sunday with two important matches that would decide the national champions

Lautoka and Rewa clashed at Churchill Park and Rewa had a clear mission: to win this match and cheer for a Suva’s defeat to clinch the national league for the first time ever. However this mission became a nightmare when Lautoka scored three goals in a row to set a 3-0 lead in the 30th minute.

Rewa did not give up: Mohammed Naizal scored in the 36th minute while the Delta Tigers scored four goals in the second half to beat their opponents by 5-3. However, it was not enough, as Suva were not defeated by Nadi at ANZ Stadium.

Hosts Suva had lots of opportunities to score but Nadi’s goalkeeper Vereti Dickson was the hero of the day by making important saves. Both teams went down to ten players in the second half when Suva’s captain Filipe Baravilala and Nadi’s Serupepeli Neikaci were sent off. After the final whistle, the score was a nil-nil draw and Suva clinched the national title for the fourth time: 1996, 1997, 2014 and 2020.

Suva and Rewa finished tied on top of the table with 27 points each, but the Capital City Boys were crowned champions because they had a bigger goal difference to deny Rewa’s first Premier League’s title. Both teams are set to represent Fiji at 2021 OFC Champions League. You can check all details about 2020 Vodafone Premier League by clicking here.
