Southern United smash Kossa FC as Telekom S-League resumes in Solomon Islands

After a three-week break, Telekom S-League is back as the second round of the major football league from the Solomon Islands kicked-off this Saturday at Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara, the capital of the country.

The opening match of the day was contested between Honiara City and Marist. This match marked the debut of five players for Honiara City: Coleman Wasi, Joel Pakaliki, Joseph Kwaila’a, Junior Pitua and Lino Houaria. On the other hand, Marist’s head coach Patrick Miniti counted on regular starters like Abraham Iniga, Alfia Aunga, Ben Fox, Bobby Lesley, Dalton Saeni, Desmond Sanga and John Aeta.

Despite all efforts, the final score was a nil-nil draw. Marist’s forward Bobby Lesley had the biggest chance of the game, but he missed. With this result, Honiara City and Marist remained in 6th and 10th, respectively, in the league table.

The second match of the day was a clash between Kossa FC and Southern United. Both teams had big news in the starting eleven as Himson Teleda, Leon Lekezoto and Richard Hiromana were debuting for Kossa while Prince Pue, Ronnie Mani and Steve Maelasi were debuting for Southern.

Youngster Alford Kanahanimae stole the ball from an opponent and passed to Augustine Halumwane who opened the scoreboard for Southern in the 22nd minute. Kossa did not have much time to react as Kanahanimae stole another ball to start a counter attack finished by Mike Foai who extended the lead after a good assist by Halumwane.

Kanahanimae was on fire defensively. The 18-year-old stole another ball in the 42nd minute to start a counter attack that was brilliantly finished by Foai who scored his second goal in the game. Southern United were having a marvelous afternoon and debutant Steve Maelasi found the net in the beginning of the second half to put his side ahead by four goals.

Kossa’s only goal of the day was scored by Innocent Sinahanua. At the final whistle, the score was 4-1 in favour of Southern United. Both teams are tied in the ladder with twelve points each. You can check the current Telekom S-League standings, results and top scorers by clicking here.
