Krishna scores again but ATK falls to Chennaiyin in 2019-20 Indian Super League

ATK received Chennaiyin FC at Salt Lake City in Kolkata for the 17th matchweek of 2019-20 Indian Super League, the top-tier of Indian football. It was the penultimate round of the regular season and ATK is already qualified for the play-offs.

Fijian forward Roy Krishna played 90 minutes and scored a goal in the first half but it was not enough for ATK as they lost to Chennaiyin by 3-0. The worst news for the Kolkata’s team is Micahel Soosairaj’s injury. He left the field in the first half and he was replaced by Anas Edathodika. You can check the match highlights by clicking here.

ATK is now in the second position with one match remaining in the regular season. Krishna’s goals was crucial for him in the Golden Boot race as he is now back to the top with 14 goals scored.

Rewa keeps the good run by winning at stoppage time as Nasinu heartbreaks Labasa

The third matchweek of 2020 Vodafone Premier League is over. Only three matches were played this Sunday as Lautoka is playing OFC Champions League and Ba is in New Zealand training for the continental tournament.

After losing two matches Nasinu received Labasa at Ratu Cakobau Park with a mission to get their first points in the league. Nasinu’s captain Jone Naraba scored in thee second half to give the lead to the Giantkillers as Labasa could not find the net. The 1-0 win was crucial and could mean a new begin for Nasinu in the season. On the other hand Labasa must get down to business and work hard because they now have two losses in three matches.

Nadi received Rewa at Prince Charles Park after losing to Lautoka by 6-0 last weekend. It was not a very good match for Nadi as they could not find the net for the second straight game. This match marked Patrick Joseph‘s return for Rewa after spending some years with Nadi. The 21-year-old was the hero of the match as he scored a penalty kick in the 91st minute to give the win to Rewa. The Delta Tigers won their second straight match and they are now in the second position.

Suva visited Navua at Uprising Resort Ground looking for a win. They had a good start and Christopher Wasasala scored his third goal in the season to open the scoreboard for Capital City Boys. However it was not enough as Monit Chand – who was debuting in the season, scored for Navua to keep the match drawn. Despite getting one point, Navua is now in the eighth and last position in the league as Nasinu won their weekend’s match. Suva is now in the third position with four points.

Suburbs good but not great against tactically questionable Hekari

In what has been almost universally agreed to have been the best match of the 2020 OFC Champions League so far, New Zealand’s debutants Eastern Suburbs defeated former champions Hekari United 2-1 at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, in a match which saw positives and negatives, as well as room for improvement going forward, for both sides.

The match was decided in the first half thanks to two goals from Uruguayan striker Martin Bueno, with Hekari equalising just before half-time through Kolu Kepo, minutes before Bueno scored his second to restore the Kiwis’ lead. Influential Hekari midfielder David Muta was sent off in the 52nd minute for a second bookable offence, which proved a bridge too far for the local favourites.

Tactically, Eastern Suburbs were sound. They recognised the strength that Hekari had in midfield, and sought to cut them out the game with long balls from the goalkeeper and defenders straight up to the attackers. Several times early in the first half, Suburbs’ strikers were caught offside trying to break the offside trap, but they were finally rewarded with Bueno’s opener in the 19th minute after the Hekari defence fell asleep.

Suburbs were, in short, exactly what you would expect from a New Zealand side at this level of competition: assured in possession, solid at the back, and able to take enough chances to seal the game. However, they were nothing special; they at times struggled with the pace of Hekari’s attackers, and wasted a good few chances in front of goal that would have put the game to bed and eased a few nerves in the second half. Furthermore, after their opposition went down to ten men, they became far too passive, looking to see out the match rather than increase their lead, which they may not have gotten away with against a slightly more clinical side.

It will be hugely interesting to see Suburbs against the firepower of Galaxy, who won 4-1 against reigning champions Hienghene Sport, and whether their professional and organised defence will cope with Galaxy’s explosiveness up front.

Hekari United, despite having bigger weaknesses than their opponents, were more exciting to watch. Perhaps it was the reaction of the home crowd every time their men took the ball forward; perhaps it was that feeling you get when rooting for the underdog; either way, the rush of excitement one felt when seeing Kolu or Ati Kepo sprint down the wing past the Suburbs’ defenders was quite something. The fact that even such a solid defence as Suburbs’ was troubled by the pace of the two brothers indicates that Hekari have a real strength there which they should utilise: they face Hienghene Sport on Wednesday, and will be encouraged by the gaping holes the reigning champions left at the back in their opening defeat – perfect holes for the Kepos to run into.

Other positives were the performances of goalkeeper Ishmael Pole and imported midfielder Vinicius Reis, the latter of whom was playing his first game in a Hekari shirt. From the first minute, when a couple of step-overs drew a huge reaction from the crowd, you could sense that Hekari had unearthed a real talent in the Brazilian, and he continued to impress throughout the game, showing a deft reading of the game and assuredness in possession that will be crucial going forward in the competition. Pole, too, was confident and competent, rushing out when needed and showing good handling in under-pressure situations. The 27-year-old must be wondering if it’s time he earns the Number 1 jersey from Ronald Warisan for the national team.

However, questions must be asked of the tactics used in the game, as well as Hekari’s defensive structure off the ball. Coach Jerry Allen decided to play an exceptionally high line in the first half, and there were warning signs in the first twenty minutes as time and again, Suburbs’ strikers were just caught offside when clean through on goal. It was no surprise that the side were able to finally break the offside trap for Suburbs’ opening goal. At this level of competition, with no video assistant to help out, playing the offside trap is very dangerous, for two reasons: firstly, defensive shape and discipline is crucial. Hekari’s centre backs, Daniel Joe and Erick Joe, were often too far apart and unable to fully communicate and keep the high line; secondly, linesmen and referees will get things wrong at this level. Suburbs’ first goal was quite possibly offside, but there was no flag. Despite that, Hekari’s defence stopped playing, and Suburbs were able to score an easy tap in. One of the first rules of the game that you learn as a kid: you play to the whistle. Hekari were guilty of not doing that for the first goal.

Hekari also need to work on their defensive shape and structure. This is perhaps a hangover from their domination of the National Soccer League, and having the lion’s share of possession and attacking chances domestically: Hekari are simply not used to defending. On the ball, the Reds looked dangerous and penetrative, but when defending, they looked to be a little panicky, showing a lack of composure, and often mistiming clearances, which in turn kept the pressure on the defence. Even Brazilian Erick Joe, who has looked tidy in his NSL appearances so far, and was the best defensively against Suburbs as well, was a little ways off his usual solid standard.

This is not the end of the road for Hekari. They had their toughest opponent first, and make no mistake, a 2-1 defeat, while a defeat, is actually an impressive result for any non-NZ side against a NZ side – especially with ten men. But the next match against the reigning champions is now a must-win, and with David Muta suspended, coach Jerry Allen will have his work cut out to find the best formula in the centre of the park, as well as tightening up at the back and maximising the usage of their pace and flair up front. Expect a reaction.

Eastern Suburbs beat Hekari United in the best match of 2020 Champions League so far

Hekari United debuted in the 2020 OFC Champions League against Eastern Suburbs from New Zealand in a very interesting match. Both teams had good strategies but Suburbs won the three points at the final whistle.

The Papua New Guinean side came to the pitch with an offensive squad. David Muta and Vinicius had a good control of the midfield and both players led Hekari’s offensive actions. The defensive line was very high and it helped Eastern Suburbs as they found plenty of space behind the defenders. Suburbs took advantage of the situation and opened the scoreboard with lethal striker Martin Bueno as Hekari defense failed to play the offside trap.

Despite the goal the match remained interesting. The 2010 OFC Champions League winners kept the ball possession and they started to find lots of space in the Suburbs’ defense. Hekari’s goal happened when Patrick Aisa found Ati Kepo free after an amazing through ball. Kepo tried to dribble Suburbs’ goalkeeper Danyon Drake but he could not pass him. However the ball has fallen into Kolu Kepo’s feet and he scored an outstandig goal to tie the match.

Hekari’s happiness did not last so long as Martin Bueno found the net for the second time after a confusion in the box to put the New Zealand side ahead in the late minutes of the first half.

The second half started with some different attitude from Hekari as Brazilian midfielder Vinicius started to play closer to the defenders while David Muta moved forward. However it did not last long as Muta saw his second yellow card in the match and was sent off in the 53rd minute after fouling Adam Thomas.

It was not a big second half. Hekari United tried to keep attacking while Eastern Suburbs tried to hold the win and that is what happened. The New Zealand side won by 2-1 with two goals scored by Martin Bueno in their first ever match in OFC Champions League. You can check the goals in the video below:

The next matchday is scheduled to be played on Wednesday. Suburbs will face Galaxy while Hekari faces Hienghène Sport that lost in the opening round by 4-1.

Galaxy demolishes title holders Hienghène Sport in Port Moresby

The first surprising result of the OFC Champions League happened in Port Moresby, where Galaxy displayed a very entertaining football to beat the current OFC Champions League champions Hienghène Sport from New Caledonia.

In the Sir John Guise Stadium, the Ni-Vanuatu side wearing red seemed dangerous since the starting of the match, with the likes of Henry Namatak and the Brazilian midfielder Roberson being very effective in their offensive plays. In the 13th minute of the clash, the Solomon Islands international Gagame Feni made a very good play in the left side, crossed the ball to the area and found Roberson unmarked, he touched the ball and it was rebounded in Rocky Nyikeine, getting back to his feet to score to an empty-net goal.

Hienghène Sport managed to have some good chances, with Antoine Roine hitting the post of Seiloni Iaruel in one opportunity and Bertrand Kaï missing an one-on-one situation with the Ni-Vanuatu goalkeeper. Galaxy defensive system had problems to deal with the pace of the Hienghène Sport strikers in some periods of the first half.

But the surprising Galaxy would score again before the break: Roberson made a fantastic solo effort in the right flank, crossed the ball and found Gagame Feni unmarked to score his first goal in the match and the second of the Ni-Vanuatu side.

The result at the end of the first half was really not expected: the current title holders being beaten by the newcomers in the competition. Galaxy proved they are strong and well organized by the Solomon Islander coach Batram Suri.

Hienghène started the second half decided to cut the deficit; the upfront men Bertrand Kaï, Nelson Kaï and Antoine Roine were despair to put their names in the scoresheet. Joseph Athalé even scored an amazing bicycle kick, but the goal did not count as he was in an offsided position. The captain Bertrand Kaï had a golden chance to score the first for Hienghène, after the Brazilian defender Diego Máximo commited a foul inside the box, making the referee award a penalty for the current title holders. The former Oceania Player of the Year took the ball, but unfortunately for his side he sent the ball over the crossbar.

The day was really not good for Hienghène; but it was stupendous for Galaxy. In the 80th minute of play, Henry Namatak received the ball in the area and crossed to the English striker Terence Carter just to tap home, putting the Ni-Vanuatu side three goals ahead in the scoreline.

The match was not over yet; just after the third goal of Galaxy, Joseph Iaruel commited another penalty in favour of Hyehen. This time Bertrand Kaï decided not to take the shot and the New Caledonian international Joseph Athalé took the responsibility and made no mistake, to cut the deficit for the current champions to 3-1.

Hienghène got a little hope after scoring in the 84th minute of the game, they went forward hoping to score another, but the Ni-Vanuatu defense was – the goalkeeper Seiloni Iaruel was very safe during the entire match.

The top-striker Kensi Tangis was introduced in the second half in place of Gagame Feni. In the only chance Tangis had to score, he made so: the striker received a long ball, ran towards Rocky Nyikeine and placed a powerful shot in the left side of the goal to give final numbers to the scoreboard: 4-1, a historical victory of the team coached by Batram Suri.

Galaxy imposed a harsh defeat to the current champions of the competition to show the strength the team really has. The newcomers collect their first three points in the process and give a very important step to qualify to the next stage.

Hieghène Sport will need a win in their upcoming match in the Group A if they want to keep their hopes alive to defend the title they had won in 2019 after beating AS Magenta in the grand final.

Hekari United debuts at home against New Zealand champions Eastern Suburbs

After missing the 2019 OFC Champions League, Hekari United is back to the tournament and they will have the crowd’s support against Eastern Suburbs from New Zealand.

While Hekari has a long history in the competition – including a title in 2010, the Suburbs are going to play the Champions League for the first time ever. However it does not mean anything inside the pitch as both teams have strong squads and they are all ready for this huge clash.

The Papua New Guinean side will count on a very experienced squad with some important players like David Muta, Michael Foster and Koriak Upaiga that were part of Hekari’s squad that won 2009/10 OFC Champions League. These three players are essential for the team as they are leaders inside ant outside the pitch.

Hekari United squad that won 2009-10 OFC Champions League

They also have some good foreigners in the squad including Erick Joe and Vinicius that came from Brazil while Vito Laloata came from Samoa to strengthen the team. Junior David is the fourth and last foreigner in Hekari’s squad.

Erick Joe will probably play an important role this match as he must be in charge of stopping Suburbs’ powerful striker Martin Bueno while Hekari’s attack will have to deal with one of the best defenses from 2019/20 ISPS Handa Premiership.

Eastern Suburbs had a difficult beginning in 2019/20 ISPS Handa Premiership as they lost many players from the previous season but they are now living a good moment as they won three of their four last encounters in the top-tier of New Zealander football.

Midfielder Adam Thurston came from England this year and he is shining at Suburbs. He scored three goals and delievered two assists in four matches and he is already a key player for the Lilywhites. Martin Bueno is a very good striker and he is ready to show his quality internationally, after impressing a lot at ISPS Handa Premiership this season so far.

Michael Built and Kelvin Kalua are also having a good moment in the ISPS Handa Premiership and both players could have an important role as flankers. Reid Drake, a talented midfielder that previously played for giants Auckland City, can give the creativity touch necessary to feed the forwards upfront.

People can expect a very good match between two great teams; strategy and organization will be crucial to set the winner and the loser.

Martin Bueno: Eastern Suburbs’ Uruguayan firepower

The Eastern Suburbs are going to play OFC Champions League for the first time ever. The New Zealand side is drawn in the group A alongside with Hekari United from Papua New Guinea, Galaxy FC from Vanuatu and current Champions League winners Hienghène Sport from New Caledonia.

It is going to be a challengeful pool for the Suburbs but they are ready for the challenge as they have a very good squad, specially in the attack as they have the Uruguayan striker Martin Bueno.

Bueno is a tall and strong striker and he has already proven his quality in New Zealand. After playing in a high level for Hamilton Wanderers in the 2018-2019 season he arrived to Eastern Suburbs last year to play 2019-20 ISPS Handa Premiership after being linked with some overseas clubs as he revealed in an exclusive interview with Oceania Football Center.

In the meantime he played the Winter Football Season for Napier City Rovers and he played an important role in the team, helping the Rovers to win the 2019 Chatham Cup.

He is one of the current top scorers of the main football league in New Zealand with 10 goals in 12 matches and the Uruguayan is ready to bother the opposite defenders with his quality and strenght.

Solomon Islands Football Federation annouced a 31-men list as Solomon Islands National Team provisional squad for Tri-Nation and OFC Nations Cup.

The list is full of young footballers including three players that represented the country in the U17 World Cup last year: Javin Wae, Leon Kofana and Raphael Lea’i.

Some important names like Benjamin Totori and Joses Nawo are not in the list. According to SIFF Technical Director Moses Toata, there are four players that were suspended and they are not going to take part of the National Team.

Tri-Nation will be a friendly tournament held in March as a preparation for OFC Nations Cup that is scheduled to take place in June.

The fantastic Koriak Upaiga: the Hekari United captain

Koriak Upaiga is well-known figure of football in Oceania; despite being in the big stage of Oceanian football for so long, Upaiga is still 32-years-old and goes for another OFC Champions League, this time captaining Hekari United after a four-year absence from the former champions of the competition. Upaiga also has experience from playing in Australia and in Solomon Islands, where he reached the semifinal stage in 2018 when player of Marist FC.

Upaiga, a 18-time international for Papua New Guinea, already tasted how it is to win the OFC Champions League – him and David Muta are the only players remaining from their historical title in 2009/10 OFC Champions League after beating Waitakere United in the finals. Hekari was the first team out of Australia and New Zealand to represent OFC in the FIFA Clubs World Cup – and Koriak Upaiga was there.

Koriak (left) playing for Hekari in FIFA Clubs World Cup 2010

In 2010, Hekari United faced Al-Wahda from United Arab Emirates and could not hold the full-professional side, losing by 3-0 in their only match in the tournament.

Koriak, a natural left-back, also is known for being an utility player – as players that can play in more than one position are known in Oceania. But, the 32-year-old goes beyond than being a defender: in the 2015 PNG National Soccer League edition, Koriak Upaiga was used as a striker for Hekari United staff – not only for one match, but for the entire season. And it worked perfectly: Upaiga was the top scorer of the season, scoring 21 goals in the process and winning the Golden Boot award.

Left-back, striker and… goalkeeper! Koriak Upaiga also started a match for Hekari United in one past season of PNG National Soccer League as a goalkeeper. The only choice for the position in that particular match was Ishmael Pole, that unfortunately for Hekari was injured.

The polyvalent Upaiga also helped Papua New Guinea to reach their first ever grand final of OFC Nations Cup in 2016 at home soil – this time playing mainly as left back, his natural position. Upaiga that made his debut in 2011 for the national team, scored his first goal for his country in this competition, in a 8-0 win over Samoa.

Unfortunately for Upaiga and his teammates, Papua New Guinea was beaten by the strong New Zealand side in the grand final in the penalty shootout, but it was certainly a moment to remember for all football fans in the country with their fantastic campaign and quality football displayed.

The fantastic Koriak – Hekari United FC – Red Army Nation

Koriak already shown how important he is for Hekari United in the actual 2019/20 PNG National Soccer League season. Currently, the Port Moresby-based side is at the top of table, having won all of their matches in the season, but it could had been different if Koriak was not there to help.

The match was 1-1 against the impressive Tusbab Stallions in PNG Football Stadium; final moments of the match, Hekari has a free-kick at the egde of the box and Koriak is there to give his side the win.

What a goal from Koriak Upaiga!

Upaiga is certainly a key figure for Papua New Guinean football and he is still there to contribute for the evolution of the sport in his country and in the entire region. In May, 2020 it will be the anniversary of 10 years of the OFC Champions League glory in 2010 – the same month the grand final of the OFC Champions League 2020 will be played. Will Hekari United lift the trophy again 10 years later? The future will tell us if it is only a coincidence or the destiny.

Malampa Revivors display good football while Lautoka struggled in attack

The second match of the group B was marked by the red card of Malampa Revivors forward Andre Batick, what made his side to play most of the match with only 10-men. Despite of the numerical advantage, Lautoka could not create clear chances to score – their only goal in the encounter was from a penalty kick taken by the New Zealand Jack Caunter.

Since the start of the clash, it was clear it would be hard for Malampa Revivors to surpass the defensive system of Lautoka: Jason Thomas playing as defensive midfielder and a back three composed by Poasa Bainivalu, Jack Caunter and Arami Manumanubai. The solid defense gave opportunity for players as Shivam Naidu and Zibraaz Sahib to feed the only attacker of the Fijians in the clash, the Ni-Vanuatu international Alex Saniel.

But it is in the midfielder where the games change; and it was controled by the talented midfielders Edwin Bai, Claude Aru and Dondy Kileteir of Malampa Revivors. Bai displayed several quality touches, including the assist for the first goal of Revivors – a through ball to Azariah Soromon that just needed to find the corner of Liam Anderson to put his side ahead. The defensive system of Lautoka was broken.

Claude Aru had a fantastic game for Malampa Revivors – OFC Media

Unfortunately for Malampa, the good defender Tasso Jeffrey commited a foul inside the box minutes later his side opened the scoreline. Jack Caunter made no mistake and put his team back in the game. The possible game-changer would be the red card of Andre Batick after an agressive foul on Jason Thomas still in the first half, but Malampa kept creating the most important chances in the counter attack. The same Tasso Jeffrey almost scored after a lapse of concentration of Lautoka’s defense that allowed him to run free to the box, but unable to find the target.

The Ni-Vanuatu side had a penalty in the second half suffered by Soromon. The former Southern United man took the ball, but unfortunately for him and for his teammates he missed the target sending the ball over the bar. The same Soromon lost another good opportunity inside the box minutes later the missed penalty, in another very good play of Edwin Bai.

The talented team of Malampa was smart enough to calm down the calm and harm Lautoka in the counter attacks, where they were more dangerous than the powerful Fijian side that had most of the possession of the ball, but could not take advantage of it – most of the possession was in defense or in short passings in the midfield.

Alex Saniel was a threat for Malampa Revivors’ defense, but he was isolated and did not receive much support from the wingers and midfielders of his team. The idea to have a solid defense is inteligent by Anand Sami, but he is going to need a faster transition from defense to midfield if he wants to make Lautoka more dangerous offensively. After suffering the first goal, Lautoka was in real trouble – the team was made to defend well and get a counter attack, now they needed to get the ball to attack to pursue an equalizer and they did not seem trained for this and the team lacked players of offensive characteristics.

All Malampa Revivors players were good technically, we might wait to see if they are well prepared physically as well in the following matches. Since the goalkeeper Julian Malnaim until the central stiker Azariah Soromon, all players seemed to know very well each other, playing from the defense with the heads up looking for the best option to pass. Jesse Kalopong made a perfect match in the right back position, and the central defenders Loic Boulet and Tasso Jeffrey were very strong and also calm when having the ball.

Lautoka has a lot to improve for their next matches in the group B, but their squad have what they need; the introdution of Dave Radrigai in the next match may make Lautoka more dangerous in attack. Malampa is a very good surprise, playing a very entertaining football and just lack the final touch – they could had won the match if they finished a little better.
