U-20 World Cup: Fiji puts a much better performance against United States but a loss was inevitable

In the FIFA U-20 World Cup match held in San Juan, Argentina, Fiji faced off against the formidable team of the United States in their second group stage match. Fiji, coming off a disappointing 4-0 loss to Slovakia in their opening game, were determined to put on a better performance. Despite their efforts, Fiji ultimately succumbed to a 3-0 defeat, but their improved display against a strong United States side offered some positives.

Fiji adopted a defensive formation, relying on their goalkeeper, Aydin Mustahib, to make crucial saves and keep the United States at bay. In the first half, Fiji managed to hold the United States to a goalless draw, which was already a significant achievement considering the quality of their opponents. Fiji struggled to create scoring opportunities, with few shots on goal in the opening half.

However, their resilience was broken in the 66th minute when Diego Luna capitalized on a fortunate rebound following a penalty claim. The Fijian defense momentarily froze, allowing Luna to find the back of the net and give the United States a 1-0 lead. Despite the setback, Fiji continued to battle and remained resolute.

As the match neared its conclusion, the United States extended their lead in the 88th minute through a fantastic finish by Cade Cowell. Cowell’s shot found the back of the net, doubling the United States’ advantage. Minutes later, Cowell struck the crossbar, narrowly missing out on adding another goal to his tally. In stoppage time, the woodwork featured once again as Brandan Craig’s shot hit the post, but the rebound fell kindly for Caleb Willey, who made no mistake in putting it away, securing a dominant 3-0 victory for the United States.

Despite the scoreline, Fiji showcased a better overall performance compared to their previous match. They managed to hold a strong United States team to a respectable margin and kept them at bay for over an hour of play. The difference in fitness levels became apparent during the game, as several Fijian players succumbed to fatigue and physical demands.

Looking ahead, Fiji will have their final group stage match against Ecuador. Although they will not progress to the knockout stages, they can take pride in their improved performance against the United States and aim to finish the tournament on a positive note. The experience gained from competing against strong opposition will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and development of the Fijian players in the future.

Notably, Chelsea FC goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina is part of the American squad, adding to their formidable lineup. The disparity between the two sides is evident, and securing a victory in this match would be nothing short of a miraculous upset for the Junior Bula Boys.

Recently when came back to Solomon Islands, the National Super League had already kick off and the requirements to be in the Kurukuru trials is that we must play in the league before I got selected. So I had a chance to replace James Egeta – another national team member – for Dawn FC. Then I got registered under the team and I manage to play the last five game and we came out as runners up last season of the National Super League“, explained the player on how he was selected to the Kurukuru.

But if we stick to the game plan and every single player contribute in the game then I think everything will be fine, but like I said again every team is prepared and they want to qualify” he added.

As the Kurukuru get ready for upcoming friendly matches in Vietnam in the next days this month, Do’oro expressed how it is being to be coached by Shaw: “He is an amazing coach, full of futsal knowledge.
